Description

Assists in compiling, maintaining and developing the spatial data repository for the Exploration GIS group.  Digitizes and geo-references historic data, assemble maps using ArcGIS software, and perform database auditing as needed.

  • Helps organize the spatial data repository, adding metadata, recording and tracking data received from various Freeport departments; digitize and geo-reference data as needed; perform QA/QC of data
  • Performs searches for technical and historical data using KOHA, File Trail or at the Port of Tucson Archive Library.  Gather, digitize, and distribute data upon request. 
  • Assists Sr GIS and Management with GIS projects.
  • Inventory, organize and catalog non-spatial data in KOHA, an open-source ILS software, using MarcEdit and EndNote as needed
  • Assists in developing standards for Exploration GIS operating procedures
  • Communicates effectively with internal and external data users. Helps to identify, track, recommend, and communicate innovative technologies and practices.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geosciences, Mining Geology, or a closely related field and one (1) year of specific experience with GIS software, within a mining industry.
  • Demonstrated experience using mapping software, including ArcGIS, MapInfo, Leapfrog, or other mining-related sofware.  Demonstrated experience using EndNote, MarcEdit, and/or other cataloging-related software.
  • Knowledge of porphry copper deposits and general exploration activites.  Strong cartographic understanding.  Ability to catalog mixed materials (maps, photos, reports, etc) in a library-tracking system. Experience using Google Earth Pro or other open-source mapping programs. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fluent in Spanish
  • Computer programming skills

Criteria/Conditions:

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hart hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.
