Group Chief Mine Geologist - Mali

Principal Job Objectives:

The Group Chief Mine geologist is required to lead the open pit mine geology team to ensure that their work commitments are carried out in a regular and consistent manner to ensure that production targets at Hummingbird’s Gold operation in West Africa are achieved. The objective is to ensure the geology is well understood, people with the right skills staff the positions and that the reserves are correctly mined so that full value of the recovered gold is received by Hummingbird in providing full shareholder value. The Group Chief Geologist is responsible for all of the Mine Geology departments functions at all of Hummingbird’s operations in West Africa by working hands on at our sites mentoring and supervising the mine geology production team(s). This also involves working alongside and with the mine planning and operations  groups  at the Hummingbird sites.   

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The applicant must be Degree Qualified Geologist with a minimum of 15-20 years experience with 5 of those as a Chief Geologist.
  • Provide leadership for the mine geology departments at Hummingbird’s open pit operations. Ensure that work assignments are carried out in a safe, competent and consistent manner in order to ensure that team members perform their work safely and that procedures are followed in the same way, at all times.
  • Ensure that all employees are aware of their safety responsibilities and follow the company’s safety policies and procedures.
  • Develop a risk management approach to the team activities and ensure that high risk controls are in place.
  • Support the creation of a workplace culture where people have a deep commitment to working safely.
  • Ensure that the RC drill rigs are operating efficiently and supporting the mine plan at least 6 months ahead.
  • Develop a ROM stockpile management strategy.
  • Liaise with the mine planning and processing team and provide them with information to assist with maximizing metal output.
  • Have prior experience at working in open pit gold mines with a good knowledge of ore control practises in a narrow vein orogenic geological environment. U/G experience is desirable but not essential.
  • Knowledgeable in Mine to Mill reconciliation systems and Grade control software for multiple open pits. Develop a grade control to mill reconciliation system and report the performance on a monthly and bench basis.
  • Ability to work in a small dynamic team environment. The position is site based and will involve working at both of Hummingbird’s operations in Yanfolila in Mali and Kouroussa in Guinea.
  • Accustomed to delivering targets, meeting deadlines and being accountable for results.
  • Look to solve problems and use initiative in avoiding pitfalls and hazards.
  • Good communication skills, accustomed to working in a foreign language and respecting local customs and traditions
  • Direct and undertake near mine exploration in coordination with the SMK Exploration group and the Kouroussa Exploration Group.
  • Ensure that the grade control practices are supported by quality assurance in the field.
  • Identify skills gaps and training required for subordinates in order for the group to perform at tope efficiency. Arrange and conduct training seminars to improve the skill sets of colleagues.

Knowledge / Skills & Competencies:

  • Knowledge of resource estimation software.
  • Knowledge of Leapfrog or similar wireframing software.
  • Knowledge of geostatistical analysis and estimation techniques.
  • Knowledge of BMT blast vectoring software.
  • Knowledge of ore estimation techniques and the inputs that are required.
  • Knowledge of ore reconciliation.
  • Geological interpretive skills for narrow Au veins and structures in orogenic Au bearing terrains.
  • Stockpile Management
  • Must have very good technical writing and presentation skills.

Training / Education requirements:

  • BSc in Geology or similar degree.
  • Be able to work in a team environment.
  • Some software modelling skills preferred but not essential.
  • Training in working safely and using safe operating procedures.

Experience required:

  • Minimum 20 years of experience with at least 10-12 years prior experience as a Chief Mine Geologist at both Underground and Open Pit operations and managing multiple production sources.
  • Experienced in Reconciliation, Grade Control, managing RC drilling programs, BMT blast vectors, understanding of open pit and U/G mining methods, effects of dilution, sampling methods, QA/QC of assay results, accomplished in mapping from prior experience.
  • Experienced in the geology and mining of narrow vein orogenic gold deposits.
  • Have knowledge and experience in analysing geology structure and how it affects geotechnical issues.
  • Experience working at operating sites and development projects in West Africa.

Language requirements:

  • Fluent English
  • French language an asset.
  • Must have good written and communications skills.

Expat roster will be 6/3, with work time split equally across our sites in Mali and Guinea.
