General Superintendent, Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) Construction Projects - Papua


This position is responsible for the management of all Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) Mine construction projects and infrastructure maintenance that fall under the responsibility of Underground (UG) Expansion. Responsibility includes construction, startup and maintenance of UG Rail systems, loading chutes, and general facilities located within the GBC Mine, a planned 160ktpd UG mining operations.

Additional Responsibilities

1. Manage the internal and contractor workforce that is used in the designated work areas.

2. Understand and ensure that all Governmental and PTFI regulations, laws and procedures are followed and adhered to with operation of critical equipment and mining practices.

3. Develop and socialize proper work procedures to ensure quality of workmanship, technically competent workmanship and safe workmanship.

4. Ensure adherence to standard PTFI safety programs. Fully participate in FRESH requirements and reporting programs. Further develop area specific safety programs that address risks in critical working areas.

5. Develop and implement key performance metrics that accurately measure performance and encourage continued improvement in contractor work areas.

6. Develop and implement maintenance practices, procedures, schedules and plans for continued maintenance of the infrastructure within the GBC Mine inclusive of rail systems.

7. Review UG rail construction schedules and ensure qualified personnel, equipment and needed technologies are available for completion of systems as planned. Ensure planned expansions meet schedules.

8. Work with the centralized project controls group to establish and maintain controls, schedules and reports for the construction projects reporting to the role.

9. Review and supplement design and construction drawings for applicable projects under the position’s responsibility.

10. Fully participate and progress succession plans that ensure qualified leaders are developed that support PTFI policies such as the Papuan Development Program.

11. Investigate, develop, and implement continuous improvement programs that encourage improved productivity, safety and efficiencies.

12. Ensure training programs are developed to provide skilled personnel during construction projects and continued maintenance of the infrastructure.

13. Ensure records are properly taken and maintained to comply with best practices and DEMR regulations.

14. Provide the leadership for the work group that allows subordinates to have clear direction, project ownership, team camaraderie and feel valued.

15. Develop and implement manpower strategies and models that allow for management of manpower and accurate forecasting and recruiting goals.

16. Engage with subordinates in the design and review of critical structures such as loading chutes, train dumps and rail systems.

17. Develop material staging practices that ensure productivity is maintained with minimal disruptions or stock outages. Develop methodologies for material storage and tracking to protect assets.

18. Liaise with pre-production work groups to ensure needed facilities and infrastructure are ready to support the production ramp-up in a timely manner.

19. Manage maintenance inventories for GBC Mine infrastructure projects to support budgeted levels of maintenance availabilities.

20. Maximize the operations, care and maintenance of the UG Rail system so that production tonnages are met and haulage is not a restriction on planned production.


• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or with ten (10) years experiences in Underground (UG) Mining.

• Experience in contract management, construction management and project management. Experience in UG Maintenance is a plus.

• Proven experience in managing a large group of employees.

• Experience in setting up scheduling systems, running projects and business management.

• Technical background (civil, structural, electrical, mechanical) with experience in construction project management, UG Mining experience required.

• Contract management.

• Computer literacy.

• Fluent in English (oral and written) and willing to learn Bahasa.

• Analytical and problem solving skills.

• Managerial and leadership skills.

• Technical communication skills (written and oral).

• Teamwork, problem solving and negotiation skills.
