Hydrogeologist provides professional, knowledgeable, and timely service to assist worldwide business units in resolving water supply and water rights issues.  The position procures and oversees consultants, manages hydrogeologic projects, performs hydrogeologic analyses, and provides technical support to legal counsel. 


  • Oversee groundwater and surface water related investigations at Freeport-McMoRan sites.  Conduct pertinent hydrogeologic assessments.  Work involves research, compilation, and interpretation of hydrogeologic data
  • Prepare Scopes of Work and Requests for Proposals, evaluate consultant submittals, supervise project budgets, manage consultant work, and edit work products
  • Utilize technical expertise to identify the unique site-specific geological and hydrological variables that are important to the investigation of well design and aquifer test methods to be tailored to each particular environment.  Approve the design and installation of monitoring, exploration, and production wells
  • Responsible for applying a basic knowledge of water rights, regulatory, and legal issues to water supply problems in support of Freeport-McMoRan business units and legal counsel.  Assist in the preparation of site water audits in coordination with technical personnel at Freeport-McMoRan sites
  • Provide assistance and coordination with land and water staff at Freeport-McMoRan sites to determine how hydrogeological problems can best be resolved
  • Keep updated on new materials and procedures, and maintain a current knowledge of water rights topics and water regulations where Freeport-McMoRan operates
  • Works with other professional staff on project assignments to resolve problems.  Work effectively with engineers, scientists, regulatory agency personnel, outside legal counsel, contractors, and consultants.  Occasionally acts as lead person or technical expert on medium to large projects


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Hydrogeology or related scientific discipline and three (3) years of experience in Hydrogeology or related scientific field
  • Knowledge of the principles and methods used in complex hydrogeological analyses, including groundwater modeling; well design, installation, and testing; and aquifer testing and analysis
  • Knowledge of different drilling methods and geophysical techniques. Ability to identify, evaluate, and implement new methods and techniques for operational improvement
  • Current knowledge and understanding of water right topics, issues, and water regulations as they apply to the various Freeport-McMoRan locations
  • Skilled in managing multiple hydrogeological projects and budgets
  • Ability to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty, with attention to detail, and to draw valid conclusions based on appropriate analytical and problem solving techniques
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to work with general office equipment such as a personal computer, keyboard, and monitor; facsimile machines; and photocopier
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Certification

  • Availability to travel both domestically and internationally (+/- 20%)
  • Some work may be in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes, or airborne particles
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs, walk on uneven surfaces, operate a motor vehicle, fly in a plane, use a computer, talk, hear, and see. Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects up to thirty (30) pounds during the course of the workday
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, or manufacturing plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
  • Freeport-McMoRan promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing and on-going random drug testing as per applicable State Laws
