Manager Tailings and Water: Phoenix, AZ, US, 85004-2121

Description

Drive good practice for Tailings, Levees and Water Dams by providing leadership; recommending improvements to processes and systems; and participating in strategic planning. Provide subject matter expertise to support and continuously improve the framework for sustaining stewardship, facility stability, risk management for tailings, crushed leach and/or water facilities, and water management. Manage and review engineering designs and analyses for crushed leach pads, tailings facilities, and general site-wide tailings and water systems. Serve as technical advisor on relevant projects and as company resource for water management/engineering information and analysis.

This role includes directing technical functions, defining program work, development of strategies for key portfolio initiatives, reviewing work for technical accuracy and adequacy, and setting policy framework for projects and operations within the regional area of responsibility in collaboration with site teams. Decisions and recommendations strongly influence basic operating policy, work at the site, and major program and project expenditures.

This role will involve interaction with multiple groups within the organization e.g. site operations and technical teams, and corporate-based (FMMS) Technical Services, Engineering & Construction, Operational Improvement, and Technology center. Role will include collaboration and coordination with site and corporate based environmental teams.

  • Serve as a technical specialist and perform critical review and analysis of engineering aspects of crushed leach pads, tailings dams, water dams, levees, and other infrastructure.
  • Scope and supervise analysis, modeling, and engineering projects related to tailings and water management practices and special investigative projects. Manage tailings-related engineering studies including those related to hydrology, hydraulics, scour, sediment transport, geotechnical engineering, geochemistry and water quality, and post-closure. Contribute to strategic planning and budgeting efforts for designated areas.
  • Guide or implement (project specific) all aspects of projects including design oversight and management, field and lab investigation coordination, sustainable development process, progress accountability reporting and tracking, regular communication with stakeholders. Present updates to management and external business partners as needed.
  • Offer tactical guidance and assistance with implementing facility oversight review recommendations (e.g., internal/external reviews and audits) as well as actively participate in the scheduled facility oversight reviews.
  • Provide technical strategy and expertise to Engineering managers, operations-based engineers, and Environmental managers on project components within areas of expertise throughout various phases of engineering design (e.g., scoping, feasibility, etc.)
  • Proactively identify and champion new technologies and management programs that will optimize operational operations and improve safety.
  • Perform other duties as requested

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

This position requires air travel.   • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Environmental Engineering or related Engineering discipline from an accredited curriculum, with courses in hydrology, water resource and geotechnical engineering and ten (10) years of experience in an applicable field of expertise, including lead or supervisory experience; OR
  • Master's degree in Civil, Geotechnical or Environmental Engineering or related Engineering discipline from an accredited curriculum, engineering and eight (8) years of experience in an applicable field of expertise, including lead or supervisory experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing in English to a diversely educated audience
  • Knowledge in the principles and practices of Civil, Environmental, Geologic, Geotechnical, or Hydrologic Engineering or a related field of Engineering
  • Able to demonstrate technical competence through design and/or operations experience in at least one of the following work areas: tailings storage facilities, crushed leach facilities, water dams, process water balance, and/or slurry transport.
  • Proficient in MS Office and other engineering tools (CAD, analytical, mapping)
  • Present a positive, professional image
  • Self-motivated, energetic, able to execute, and client-service oriented
  • Be able to prioritize tasks and work well under pressure
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety of yourself and others
  • Diligent in following safety practices and recognizing hazards

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Registration in Engineering
  • Post-graduate degree (MS/PhD) in Civil or Environmental Engineering
  • Knowledge in the principles and practices of Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resource Engineering, Hydrology or a related field of science or Engineering
  • Experience with metal mining operations, especially with tailings storage facilities, water dams, levees, management, and operations
  • Field experience in site investigations and data collection of hydrologic and climatic systems
  • Expertise in sediment transport mechanisms and experience in sediment transport modelling
  • Expertise in general modeling and numerical approaches to solving engineering challenges
  • Able to evaluate and implement new methods and techniques in technical projects and operational support
  • Expertise in managing programs with various levels of operational staff and professionals
  • Project Management experience
  • Strong (verbal and written) communication and documentation skills with demonstrated skills in persuasion and negotiation of critical issues. Ability to direct and manage difficult or unfavorable topics, team members, and/or internal/external stakeholders to effectively meet project goals.
  • Proficiency in using appropriate software (MS Office, GIS)
  • Competency in Spanish or Bahasa Indonesian languages


Please note: This position has the possibility to work remotely up to 100% of the time. The position will require occasional travel to the Phoenix corporate offices and/or site locations . This position may be performed anywhere in the U.S. except California, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky and New York.  Additional states may be excluded from remote work based on business factors.  Should the positions shift to in-office work in the future, the company will offer relocation benefits at that time should the position meet the established eligibility for these benefits.

 

This in-person position is performed onsite at Freeport-McMoRan’s corporate office in Phoenix, Arizona.
