The VP Operations will be responsible for all production operations at the Kumtor Gold Mine , which is a large 500,000tpd open pit operation located at altitude. As a member of the executive management team, the incumbent provides expert input and participates in strategic and business decision-making at executive level. Within the framework of the business strategy and business goals, the incumbent determines the operational strategy, goals and priorities, and leads and directs members of the operations management team in the development and execution of strategies, plans, programs, processes and services to meet the operational goals.


  • Promote and monitor full compliance with all Kyrgyz Republic legislation and regulatory requirements relevant to the different functional areas at the mine operation. Oversee compliance by departmental managers with all company policies and procedures.

  • Manage all site operations in the mine and mill and working closely with functional VPs in  Finance, Human Resources, Procurement and Risk Management.

  • Ensure that the company’s short and long-term production targets, schedules and mine plans are met through effective leadership of subordinates.

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to development and enforcement of Safety and Environmental objectives.

  • Initiate and manage projects to address emerging needs or improvements, as identified within own areas of responsibility, and/or as determined in conjunction with the President or executive team, and/or as participator in projects initiated by Centerra Gold corporate office.

  • Ensure that all mining, preparation and auxiliary equipment is properly maintained at the optimal cost levels.

  • Identify, formulate, and expand the development of effective plans and procedures to ensure maximum operating efficiencies, including cost controls. Formulate annual operating and capital budgets and optimize those expenditures.

  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of direct reports.  Support management & supervisor development programs in co-ordination and establish high standards of performance for management.

  • Maintain proactive and open communication with all management teams, providing accurate data on the operation, as well as insightful interpretation of that data.

  • Keep abreast of state-of-the-art mining methods and equipment and make recommendations for improvements.



The position reports to the Kumtor President for all matters pertaining to the operation of the mine and naturally interacts frequently with the Centerra corporate office. 




  • Currently likely in a senior operations general management role wishing to take the next career step or a current Vice-President who is looking for a more challenging career opportunity.

  • A minimum of fifteen years of progressive experience in mining operations including at least 5 years in similar size open pits preferably in gcld climatic conditions.

  • Recent international experience is a requirement.   


  • Must be willing to relocate and actively enjoys international assignments.

  • Superior operational management skills, combined with an ability to develop and execute plans by applying leadership skills not just management techniques.

  • Maintains close supervision of all mining operations, being present at the mine on a 9 days and 5 days off roster.

  • Must be adept at motivating and obtaining results, leading by example with a participatory management style. Firm but fair results orientation.

  • Ability to exercise sound business judgment in a developing country.

  • Strong team orientation. Works co-operatively with peers in other operational functions and in corporate office.

  • Must possess a solid work ethic, high energy level, and strong desire to do things safely and efficiently.

  • Must exhibit exemplary integrity. The individual must place value on sharing information and common goals, maintaining an environment of honesty, openness, and energetic exchange.

  • An outstanding communicator who speaks, writes, and listens well. Ability to communicate in Russian would be an advantage.

  • A strong decision-maker who does gets into details when required but does not become mired in them. Seeks broad input when making decisions. 

  • Must be willing to enthusiastically attack problems and assume ownership of issues and solutions facing the project/operation.

  • Self-directed and self-motivated, demonstrating initiative to do more than is expected or required in the position.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or Engineering or equivalent experience.


  • The mine is situated at 4,000 meters so has to be able to pass High Altitude Fitness medical.
