As a key member of the Process team and reporting into the Manager Process Plant, the Superintendent Control Room is accountable for the efficient coordination and optimisation of all the components and interrelationships between the different operating sections of the processing plant, and beyond; Direct the overall macro operating strategy of the processing plant, coordinating and integrating all the components to maximise production and minimise costs, while ensuring operational sustainability. The role has a focus on daily-monthly optimisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand and execute accountabilities of legal appointment under Zambian Mining Regulations;
  • Maintain HSE standards and ensure strict compliance of control room team;
  • Ensure all Safety and Environmental incidents are addressed & reported promptly;
  • Ensure effective support of lock-out procedure provided to shift teams;
  • Work with the Maintenance, Processing and Technical Superintendents to coordinate and prioritise macro and possibly conflicting activities, to optimise the global output of the plant;
  • Coordinate and hold to account the Shift Senior Supervisor for the relentless drive for maximised tonnes;
  • Consistently deliver and exceed the main KPI's of plant throughput, utilisation and recovery;
  • Lead daily operations of the Control Room and personnel to ensure optimised plant utilization and metallurgical performance;
  • Monitor, control and report on performance indicators, plant activities and operational shortfalls;
  • Ensure the control room team operates the plant 'expert' control system, maintaining high utilisation;
  • Ensure the control room team operates the critical in-line instrumentation & measurements (ie PSI & OSA), for real-time performance optimisation;
  • Manage, track and report continuous improvement activities to deliver improved operational performance;
  • Ensure strong real-time interaction with Mining Operations (via Dispatch and/or Mine Captain) on ore feed rate and quality for plant optimisation;
  • Ensure the proper diagnosis of plant defects by the Shit Senior Supervisors and then the implementation of corrective measures;
  • Ensure both short term maintenance schedules (both maintenance and production tasks) are in place to deliver and exceed the production targets;
  • Coordinate the processing aspects of major plant shutdowns;
  • Support maintenance in the delivery of their tasks and equipment reliability;
  • Define, prioritise, obtain approval for and implement capital improvement projects;
  • Lead the Control Room team, composed of expatriates and nationals, to consistently deliver and exceed expectations;
  • Maintain staff development and training programs, particularly skills transfer and coaching to the national staff;
  • Identify and actively manage succession planning and coverage for key roles;
  • Contribute to the quarterly and annual operations production budget/forecasts;
  • Prepare the annual operations budget and provide quarterly forecasts;
  • Control, report and reduce operational costs, and ensure cost consideration taken with all decisions;
  • Implement FQM Way culture in the Control Room team  – "Smarter, Bolder,

  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Manager Processing Plant.

    • Excellent cognitive and analytical skills for identifying process shortfalls, equipment bottlenecks and implementing corrective and preventative action plans;
    • Possess ability to analyse and understand complex metallurgical information;
    • Strong understanding of metallurgical process improvement and control strategies;
    • Possess the management discipline and perseverance to develop and implement medium to long range plans;
    • Strong understanding of technical, production and maintenance strategies for large-scale, continuous operating mineral processing plants;
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and able to assemble data and provide clear and accurate operational performance reports in both an upward and downward direction;
    • Ability to maintain self-discipline within a stressful environment;
    • Be diligent and thorough in approach;
    • Be enthusiastic and pro-active in manner;
    • Computer fluency is a must.
    • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
    • English language fluency.

    Qualifications (required for job)      

    • A Tertiary Qualification in Extractive Metallurgy, Mineral Processing or related field;
    • Eligibility for membership of the Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ), and to hold legal appointment as defined by the Mining Regulations of Zambia.

    Knowledge and Experience required for job           

    • A minimum of 10 years of direct experience in technical and/or operational roles of crushing & grinding circuits;
    • A minimum of 5 years experience at a Senior Supervisory or Management;
    • Significant experience in a large, complex base metals processing plant(s);
