Job Description

To provide geotechnical and mining engineering technical support to the mining department and mining contractors to ensure that the mine functions effectively and safety. To be familiar with and understand the principles of Tasiast’s environment policy, and to maintain and support procedures and work practices aimed at preventing accidents or injuries. Supervise the Geotechnical sub group of the Technical Services Department

Job Responsibilities

Functional Responsibilities

  • Develop geotechnical design criteria to support safe & optimal mine operations
  • Assist in Development and maintenance of the Tasiast Ground Control Management Plan
  • Plan & manage the installation of mine wide geotechnical monitoring systems
  • Conduct ground support trials and making recommendations on their performance
  • Assist with continuous improvements in drilling and blast designs while ensuring they comply with mining regulations and site standards as they relate to Geotechnical Wall Control blasting.
  • Coordinate with the Drill and Blast Engineers and Mining Contracts to ensure maximum utilization of production drilling equipment as it relates to Geotechnical Wall Control blasting.
  • Advice planning and operations personnel on geotechnical issues relating to production drilling, blast and mine design
  • Provide technical support where electronic blasting is carried out
  • Ensure that drilling and blasting plans for the open pit operation are carried using appropriate software packages following the correct procedures and standards

Reporting

  • Ensure that all reporting requirements and licensing conditions by regulatory bodies are met
  • Develop, maintain & update the Ground Control Management Plan
  • Plan the collection, analysis and interpretation of geotechnical data
  • Effectively communicate geotechnical outcomes
  • Provide comprehensive and timely contributions to the daily, weekly, monthly and annual reports 

Other project work

  • Improve the overall safety performance of the site including facilitating Job Safety Analysis’ and Serious Incident Analysis’
  • Promote the environment as an integral aspect to the department and ensure minimal disturbance to the environment
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the Mauritanian Mining Regulations & ensure compliance with same
  • Understand the Duty of Care requirements including the Tasiast Standards, Approved Codes of Practice, Industry standards and other legislation relevant to the area of responsibility.
  • Train and mentor national engineers in all aspects of geotechnical engineering, including identification of geotechnical skills development programs & courses for national engineers to undertake and participate in

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 10+ years mining experience in highly mechanized mining methods with exposure sub-level cave mining preferable
  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications, preferably to post graduate level
  • Practical experience with advanced geotechnical monitoring instruments and techniques, in particular micro seismic systems
  • Exposure to electronic/digital blasting systems
  • High level of computer literacy with specialized mining software such as Surpac and Mine 24D
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Effective decision making and problem solving skills
  • Effective organizational and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to delegate
