Direct and administer the electrical power related issues regarding branch requirements, future projects and expansion, and long-term planning and procurement.  Identify and determine the impact of evolving regulatory requirements and global power generation and transmission constraints.  Direct the federal and state regulatory programs for FCX owned utilities and rate case intervention strategy for 3rd party supplier utilities to FCX branch operations.  Recommend strategies for energy efficiency programs, measurement and monitoring, renewable energy projects and meeting corporate sustainability targets.

  • Direct the safety, performance and cost controls for Freeport’s exempt wholesale generation portfolio, and the distribution utility operations of MW&E and AIC
  • Perform federal and state rate case filing reviews of 3rd party utilities providing service to FCX branch operations and direct legal and consultant activity to prosecute rate intervention and related testimony
  • Administer utility customer service interface/communication relationships between branch operations and utility providers
  • Direct and provide the technical expertise in planning and executing the safety, engineering, procurement, construction, and customer service for major capital projects for power system infrastructure within the company
  • Develop and implement power supply strategy and negotiate power supply contracts
  • Perform other duties as requested

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline or related field or equivalent experience
  • Fifteen (15) years of experience with processes, systems, and terminology in utility tariffs, domestic and international wholesale energy procurement and marketing functions, rate making principals, energy infrastructure, and energy efficiency
  • Thorough understanding of the electrical engineering, distribution utility regulatory practice,  and gas safety discipline
  • Ability to direct and lead teams on energy related work
  • Ability to coordinate and lead multi-disciplined work on power system projects
  • Strong (oral and written) communication skills both up and down the management chain
  • Strong business ethics
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suites of Business applications
  • Ability to work with general office equipment such as personal computers, facsimile machines, and photocopiers
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards



  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Twenty (20) years of related experience
  • Experience in wholesale procurement, marketing , and regulations for electricity and natural gas
  • Experience in mining/minerals industry


  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English
  • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
  • Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment
  • Position is in busy, non-smoking office located in downtown Phoenix, AZ
  • Location requires mobility in an office environment; each floor is accessible by elevator
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear, and see
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor construction or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toed boots, protective clothing, gloves, and any other protective equipment as required
