Provide strategic leadership and direction to the occupational health initiatives, issues and processes of the corporation.  Support business units, site personnel and facilities with regards to technical occupational health needs.

  • Provide strategic leadership and support to the Health & Safety Steering Committee and Industrial Hygiene Steering Team
  • Develop, design, and lead implementation and continuous improvement of key occupational health and industrial hygiene initiatives, including initiatives for, but not limited to, industrial hygiene monitoring, ergonomics, employee wellness, and occupational health best practice development
  • Provide expert knowledge on the anticipation, evaluation, recognition and control of diverse chemical, physical and biological hazards
  • Review current occupational health and industrial hygiene information, regulations, internal and external data and observations and prepare technical reports and recommendations to the corporation or appropriate business units
  • Prepare technical reports based on data, observations and current regulations
  • Manage the Corporation's Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) development process and occupational health related databases
  • Represent the Corporation on various trade associations, scientific committees and panels and interact with regulatory agencies, academic institutions and other organizations involved in occupational health
  • Support the Corporation's safety and health assessment process through development of protocols related to occupational health and participation on approximately one quarter (1/4) of the assessments conducted each year
  • Perform other duties as requested

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and seven (7) years of experience in Occupational Health & Safety, OR
  • Master’s degree and five (5) years of experience in Occupational Health & Safety, OR
  • Some post-secondary education and ten (10) years of experience in Health & Safety or Mining Operations, plus five (5) years of Health & Safety experience in the mining industry, including three (3) years in a Supervisory capacity
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety practices and emergency preparedness in heavy industry
  • Proven ability to be self-directed and work independently or in a team environment
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills essential
  • Must demonstrate appropriate analytical skills, attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks and work well under pressure
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Ability to make good decisions and enforce company policies in accordance with applicable regulations and procedures
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards




Professional certification(s) :

1) Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

2) Certified Mine Safety Professional (CMSP) or

3) Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) with safety management experience

    • Demonstrated leadership abilities
    • Experience with OSHA regulations
    • Experience working in a roasting and chemical plant environment


  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English
  • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
  • Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment
  • Work is performed in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, talk, hear and see
  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects up to thirty (30) pounds during the course of the workday
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
  • Freeport-McMoRan promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing and on-going random drug testing
Freeport-McMoRan has reviewed the jobs at its various office and operating sites and determined that many of these jobs require employees to perform essential job functions that pose a direct threat to the safety or health of the employees performing these tasks or others.  Accordingly, the Company has designated the following positions as safety-sensitive:
  • Site-based positions, or positions which require unescorted access to site-based operational areas, which are held by employees who are required to receive MSHA, OSHA, DOT, HAZWOPER and/or Hazard Recognition Training; or 
  • Positions which are held by employees who operate equipment, machinery or motor vehicles in furtherance of performing the essential functions of their job duties, including operating motor vehicles while on Company business or travel (for this purpose “motor vehicles” includes Company owned or leased motor vehicles and personal motor vehicles used by employees in furtherance of Company business or while on Company travel); or
  • Positions which Freeport-McMoRan has designated as safety sensitive positions in the applicable job or position description and which upon further review continue to be designated as safety-sensitive based on an individualized assessment of the actual duties performed by a specifically identified employee.
