Fort Knox is an open-pit gold mine located near Fairbanks, Alaska in one of the largest gold producing areas of the state. It is mined by conventional open-pit methods, with ore processed at a mill and heap leach facility. Fort Knox has one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world.

Job Description

Provide support to the Health and Safety Department by administrating the site Industrial Hygiene Program and the direct supervision of the FGMI emergency response staff.  This position will facilitate area Industrial Hygiene Inspections, training and all monitoring activities necessary to maintain a safe and healthy work place, while consistently ensuring regulatory compliance while continuously aligning daily functions to reflect Kinross’ values. Additionally, this position will supervise the FGMI medical staff, the program and act as a liaison with the offsite medical director.    

Job Responsibilities

  • Administrate site industrial hygiene activities to include, but not limited to monitoring area or personal exposures to dusts, mists, fumes, gases, etc.                                    
  • Conducts health surveys and sampling site wide, and creates and/or maintains appropriate data tracking systems.                                                                                 
  • Supervise the development and implementation of appropriate administrative and engineering controls, as deemed necessary by the results of monitoring and measuring activities.             
  • Calibrates, maintains and/or operates industrial hygiene equipment as deemed necessary to ensure compliance to organizational and regulatory requirements.
  • Evaluates and maintains current all industrial hygiene standard operating procedures, manuals, programs, etc. (e.g. Hearing Conservation and Respiratory Protection).          
  • Assists with development of emergency preparedness activities, such as compliance with the Cyanide Code.
  • Demonstrates excellent supervisory and leadership skills for the onsite medical staff.
  • Supervises case management activities.  
  • Takes a leadership role in developing, implementing and sustaining the FGMI emergency management system, including the onsite ambulance service.
  • Participates in Health & Safety Audits and facilitate implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Available to conduct side by side sampling during MSHA inspections.
  • Fills in for the Health & Safety Superintendent, when he is offsite.
  • Assist in the development of the Health & Safety Coordinators.
  • Takes a lead role in ensuring site Health & Safety management compliance. 
  • Available to support the mine site with on call duties.   
  • Estimated travel based on current job requirements is 13%.
  • Possesses good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Helps develop other department personnel to perform duties listed above.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality and code of conduct.
  • Meets or exceeds established performance expectations set by management.
  • Consistently exercises discretion and judgment in job performance.
  • Works without risk or harm to self and others.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by state agency, or must be able to pass driver competency course and exam.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance required.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned by supervisor.

Education and Experience

  • Must possess or have the capability of obtaining a CMSP or MSP certification.
  • Must possess or have the capability of obtaining an MSHA instructor certification. 
  • COHC certification preferred.
  • Industrial Hygiene Certificate preferred.
  • Fall Protection Competent Person Certification preferred.


  • General understanding of mining operations, as well as limited understanding of milling and maintenance operations.
  • Working knowledge and skill with P.C. utilizing work processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Ability to work independently and also as a member of the management team.
  • Demonstrates strong administrative, organizational and technical writing skills
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
