Engineering Manager - Maintenance, Smelter (E)

KMP commissioned a greenfield copper smelter March 2015. The smelter has ramped up rapidly and is currently operating at approximately 90% of nameplate capacity (1.2 Mtpa of copper concentrate). The main plant areas are: 

• Raw material receiving and blending • Isasmelt smelting furnace • Electric slag cleaning furnace • Peirce-Smith Converters (4) • Anode Furnaces (2) • Anode Casting wheels (2) • Double contact acid plant • Cryogenic oxygen plant • Plant utilities (air, fuel and water)

The engineering manager is responsible for routine maintenance, major shutdowns and continuous improvement of the smelting complex.

Location: Solwezi  Site: Kansanshi

  • Ensure that the smelter is maintained in a safe and efficient manner, resulting in achievement of safety targets, and the design availability of the plant, while effectively managing the costs. 
  • Provide technical excellence in plant maintenance.
  • Maintain and improve maintenance systems.
  • Develop and manage compliance of routine maintenance budgets.
  • Develop and manage compliance of major shutdown budgets.
  • Identify and implement plant modifications to improve the smelter's safety performance and/or operating efficiency.
  • Routinely review smelter spares holding, to ensure that adequate spares are available, without excessive wastage.
  • Plan and manage the execution of routine and major smelter maintenance shutdowns.
  • Ensure strict adherence to relevant engineering standards and practices.
  • Ensure that there is a culture of continuous improvement in the engineering team. 
  • Identify the training needs within the enginering team and implement programs to address the needs. 
  • Develop the capability of the engineering team, in particular the development of local talent.
  • Ensure that there is a sucession plan for each supervisory position in the engineering team.
  • Ensure that work standards and discipline maintained.
  • Maximise the performance of the Engineering team, by coaching and counsel as necessary.
  • Bachelor degree in Engineering or equivalent 
    (eg relevant trade experience).
  • Must be a member of EIZ.
  • At least 15 years relevant technical experience; including 5 years of management experience.
  • Have a good practical understanding of mulpiple engineering disciplines.
