Based in Mauritania, Kinross Tasiast is set to become one of the great gold finds of our generation. It is the first mine in a highly prospective greenstone belt, located within an extensive gold system that is largely underexplored.

Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Services, this position leads and coordinates all aspects of health, safety and environmental functions with the objective to ensure 100% compliance with the company’s policies and certification to international standards.

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for ensuring health, safety and environmental policies, practices and applications meet or exceed industry standards
  • Execute oversight of daily management routines according to policies and procedures within prescribed guidelines e.g. ensuring all work planned conforms to Tasiast site permitting
  • Ensures site compliance with Mauritanian legislation and International standards established for all aspects of departmental and site activities
  • Provides and assures guidance for all projects and related construction / contractor activities to Tasiast and accepted international standards  
  • Provides daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly reporting of departmental activities for verification of site compliance to local, regional, corporate and Mauritanian regulations and commitments
  • Must ensure mentoring of less experienced engineers and employees
  • Assists in the development of  health, safety and environmental standards equal to OSHA 18001 and ISO 14110, World Health Organization, Cyanide Code while ensuring 100% compliance to all Tasiast standards of excellence
  • Other managerial duties as required
  • Addresses queries and provides oversight to technical issues for internal customers while ensuring Health, Safety and Environmental standards are constantly met
  • Develops relationships with internal customers and external resources to support all activities of the Tasiast mining operation
  • Ensures that all employees receive required compliance training
  • Works closely with the Project Development Groups to ensure Tasiast standards are fully adhered to and understood before site based activities commence
  • Directs and audits systems, people and activities on all site based health, safety and environmental work
  • Acts as a communication linchpin with the team and models all organization’s values
  • Contributes to the development and revision of policies and procedures

Education and Experience

  • 5 – 10 years of related work experience, including previous project / operations management experience in a mining environment
  • Complete knowledge of the principles of health and safety standards while possessing current environmental certifications
  • Written and spoken English proficiency
  • Must read and write fluently and must be able to communicate to all levels of management

 

EDUCATION

  • College or University degree in a related field

EXPERIENCE

  • Previous Expatriate experience in mining at a remote location is an asset
  • Ability to adapt and  learn quickly
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets
  • Experience in a computerized maintenance software is an asset
  • Ability to budget for a large scale project development as well as work within the approved budget
