Community Relations & Environment Manager - Burkina Faso

Teranga Gold is a multi-jurisdictional West African gold company focused on production and development as well as the exploration of more than 5,000km2 of land located on prospective gold belts. Teranga operates the only gold mine and mill in Senegal, West Africa.  Gold production is expected to average about 200,000 ounces annually at all-in sustaining costs in the lowest (best) quartile of industry costs allowing the Company to generate strong free cash flows. Beyond the Company’s mine plan are significant opportunities for organic growth through further exploration in Senegal and Burkina Faso in West Africa. 

 

The Community Relations and Environmental Manager reports into the Site Operation Manager – Director Regional Community Relations and Environmental Affairs and to oversee and direct the activities of the site Community Relations and Environment Department personnel, ensuring that agreed assignments are performed to agreed standards in expected time frames.

This role also requires the incumbent to liaise with Government agencies in a mediator function and in close cooperation with Ouagadougou office Government Relations representative to ensure external support and participation is achieved in a professional and timely manner.

The Community Relations and Environmental Manager will be a member of the site leadership team who will actively participate in the strategic planning and development of the company’s Burkina Faso operations, including all aspects of the Banfora resettlement, environmental and community development planning and financial management pertinent to the position.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS:

·         Project manage all aspects of the Physical and Socio-economical resettlement projects.

·         Build relationships with the major Government agencies in regional centres and Ouagadougou.

·         Build relationships with the local village Chiefs and local political appointees e.g. Mayors and Regional Council President.

·         Achieve access to conduct exploration drilling activities in mining lease and exploration licenses.

·         Complete and close out the village relocation projects.

·         Appropriately allocate funds and project-manage social projects implemented during the construction phase.

·         Develop a strong Community Relations team and commence a development / succession plan and promote sustainability projects amongst community.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT:

·         Assist and support both the Mine Exploration and Regional exploration teams to maintain the planned drilling programs.

·         Project-manage the preparation and submission of all relevant permitting documents needed to secure permits as part of the construction phase of the project.

·         Oversee the update and implementation of both Environment Management Plan and Site closure and Rehabilitation Plan.

 

Required Skills and Experience

·         M.Sc in environmental or social sciences with 10 years of experience in environmental or social related positions, or B.sc and 15 years of experience.

·         Project planning, management and scheduling experience.

·         Excellent organizational, presentation, interpersonal and communication skills.

·         Bilingual (French/English) is highly desirable.

·         Demonstrated record of multidisciplinary team management.

·         Proven track record of successful permitting and management of consulting companies and contractors.

·         Ability to work under time constraints and adhere to deadlines.

·         Ability to work in remote locations and construction sites.

·         Must have the desire to take initiative and work independently.

·         Ability to interact with all level of stakeholders.

·         Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.

·         Valid driver license.
