(Position is based in the town of Fungurume)

The incumbent selected for this role will be part of the Tax & Legal Dept. of the company that will be based at the remote mine site, will liaise daily with the site Management and will be responsible for the provision of legal advice and support to the company’s industrial operations in Africa.
This legal advisor position will be required to provide high-quality, thoughtful, cost-effective legal advice and policy guidance in a broad range of disciplines; which may include company law, commercial transaction, environmental, regulatory compliance, anti-corruption, community engagement and labor law and will require a candidate capable of liaising  with relevant depts. to ensure that legal risks have been identified, appropriate courses of action have been taken. He will review ongoing cases and will advise management accordingly. He will also interact and represent the company during working sessions with local officials.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience working in Africa and/or other developing countries.

Qualifications

  • JD degree or international equivalent, member of state bar or international equivalent
  • Four (4+) plus years of relevant experience with,  with demonstrated experience as in-house counsel
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze factual and legal issues, reason and exercise sound judgement
  • Self-motivated and client-service oriented.  Capable of responding to multiple matters in a timely manner
  • Fluency in French is required, fluency in English is a plus
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and professional demeanor
  • Strong comprehension of both legal standard and expectations of an international, publicly-traded company
  • Ability to be site-based in a remote location 
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Word and Outlook
Criteria/Conditions
  • Position involves work to be predominantly executed in rural areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Resources can be limited, so the candidate must be a self-starter, have good personal organization skills for managing activities across multiple sites and in challenging circumstances
  • Work is in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see
  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects up to thirty (30) pounds during the course of the workday
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
