Fort Knox is an open-pit gold mine located near Fairbanks, Alaska in one of the largest gold producing areas of the state. It is mined by conventional open-pit methods, with ore processed at a mill and heap leach facility. Fort Knox has one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world.

Job Description

Responsible for mapping dig faces and high wall exposures in open pit mines and mapping blast hole patterns and structural zones.  Also responsible for integrating geologic data into grade control program and guiding shovel and loader operations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Log blast hole cuttings.
  • Prepare geologic and alteration maps of dig faces and high wall exposures.
  • Map structural features and rock quality characteristics and analyze data to determine high wall stability.  Utilize mapping data for predictive geotechnical model for the mine.
  • Advise mine operations personnel and engineering staff of potential high wall stability problems.
  • Monitor blast hole sampling protocol and blast hole assaying.  Revise sampling procedures as needed to ensure that representative samples are collected.  Perform QA/QC sampling program for blast hole assaying.
  • Perform grade control responsibilities.
  • Work with loading unit operators and mine supervisors at the dig face to guide mining and minimize mining dilution.
  • Consult with metallurgical staff on geologic/mineralogical characteristics of ore that may impact mill recoveries.
  • Interface with Senior Geologist to refine and update reserve and resource models based on geologic and geochemical data from mapping and grade control sampling.
  • Undertake other duties associated with the safe and efficient operation of open pit mines.
  • Maintain accurate records and files.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance is required.
  • Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures including but not limited to safety, confidentiality, and environmental policies.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the state.
  • Work safely in all areas and identify potential safety hazards and work with management to correct them.
  • Work without significant risk of harm to self and others.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s of Science degree or higher in geology is required.
  • Minimum of two years as a mine geologist in open pit mines preferred.
  • Exposure to grade control for gold mining.
  • Must have a sound background in sampling theory for gold and assay techniques.
  • Must have a strong commitment to safe working practices.

Skills

  • Sound working knowledge and skill with a PC utilizing word processing and spreadsheet programs.  Knowledge of Medsystem/MineSight/ACAD software is a plus.
  • Demonstrate strong administrative and organizational skills.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the physical demands sheets.
