Fort Knox is an open-pit gold mine located near Fairbanks, Alaska in one of the largest gold producing areas of the state. It is mined by conventional open-pit methods, with ore processed at a mill and heap leach facility. Fort Knox has one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world.

Job Description

Reporting to the Site Controller, the Contract Administrator (CA) is responsible for all the contractual agreements pertaining to the procurement of materials, equipment or services that support the business efforts of Kinross, Fort Knox. CA is responsible for the entire lifecycle of the contract including defining the requirements, researching opportunities, negotiating with sources, writing contracts, awarding contracts and close-out when the contract terms are completed. The CA ensures that the contract complies with any applicable state or labor requirements as well as company policies. CA will be cognizant of company business goals and negotiate the best prices for products and services while monitoring any associated risks. The CA will work closely with Kinross Global Supply Chain as well as Fort Knox Supply Chain Superintendent, site management and Kinross legal departments (Regional & Corporate). Bids and proposals are solicited from existing sources or new sources through advertisements, trade publications, etc. Contract administrator evaluates terms and awards the contract based upon respective manager’s recommendation according to the data. During a contract, the CA is responsible for monitoring the terms of the contract including progress, plans, invoices and payments.

Job Responsibilities

  • Directs activities in conjunction with the Fort Knox Supply Chain Superintendent concerning contracts for purchase or sale of equipment, materials, products or services: Examines performance requirements, delivery schedules, estimates of costs of materials, equipment and production to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Prepares bid documents, process specifications, test and progress reports (as applicable), and other exhibits that may be required.
  • Reviews bids for conformity to contract requirements and determines acceptability of each bid.
  • For construction services contracts, plans, schedules and chairs post-bid reviews with selected contractors.
  • Negotiates contract with successful bidder(s).
  • Advises applicable departments (within FGMI) of contractual rights and obligations.
  • May compile data for preparing estimates.
  • Verify that the Contractor or Vendor complies with all the terms and conditions of the contract documents.
  • Identify materials breaches of contract.
  • Ensure the collection, review and maintenance of any/all required certificates of insurance and performance bonds.
  • Verify all parties have fulfilled their contractual obligations.
  • Assess the success of the contract.
  • Determine and identify “lessons learned” for future contracting.
  • All deliverables (including reports) have been received and accepted.
  • Any contract oversight issues have been resolved.
  • Final payment has been made.
  • Confirm that all inventory and property issues are resolved and final acceptance of goods/services has been approved by Project Manager or applicable Operational Manager.
  • May supervise hourly employees.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or Business Management or equivalent experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Strong background in contract administration is required.
  • Candidates should have 5 to 10 years’ experience as a contract administrator.


  • Must have strong leadership, negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word & Access)
  • Proficiency with ERP systems (preferably JD Edwards) as well as the ability to use company mandated contractual templates.
