Bald Mountain is an open-pit mine with a large estimated mineral resource base located in Nevada. It is the newest mine in Kinross’ portfolio and was acquired in January 2016.

Job Description

To provide leadership to and oversee the execution of the strategy for the health and safety team, ensuring alignment with the organization’s long-term strategy.  Develops and administers health and safety procedures and training programs and ensures compliance with overall company guidelines and regulations.  Acts as a senior resource on health and safety issues and participates in business and / or project planning by offering technical expertise.  Ensures continued growth of the team through maximizing operational efficiencies and profitability.  This position may be at the corporate, regional or site level and will be focused in one of, or a combination of the following areas: health, safety, hygiene and / or environment.  

Job Responsibilities

• Uses in-depth technical knowledge to manage the health and safety function
• Manages health and safety responsibilities including, but not limited to: accident and injury reporting, investigation reports, statistical analysis, property damage costs, worker’s compensation claims and associated costs
• Oversees the health and safety function including setting goals and developing systems and measures that appropriately assess functional performance; accountable for results
• Performs safety audits and evaluates current safety hazard controls and safety initiatives for compliance with Kinross’ Environment, Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS)
• Manages the human, financial and operational resources of the function; sets priorities and allocates resources
• May manage technical projects which includes defining and achieving project goals, anticipating and minimizing risks, managing resources and delegating tasks
• Responds to requests and provides guidance and advising across the group / function
• Implements change efforts which includes designing and implementing change strategies and mitigating risks
• Measures, audits and evaluates the health and safety programs for all activities to ensure compliance with regional and global health and safety and legislative requirements and communicates the results of the evaluations to management and the appropriate corporate personnel
• Influences leaders and key stakeholders to support health and safety change efforts that will result in sustained competitive advantage
• Prepares business cases and reports regarding projects and initiatives and presents recommendations and status updates to key stakeholders
• Reviews best practices and the competitive landscape and recommends continuous improvement efforts in health and safety
• May provide input into the development of policies and practices and ensures adherence to established methods
Required Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field
• Formal professional registration in appropriate area of expertise
• Certification through an accredited association such as CSP, CRSP or CIH or other equivalent certifications within the region they reside are desired

• Generally more than 10 years of related work experience
• Previous experience in mining industry is preferred
• Expertise in applying safety management techniques, risk management, root cause analysis, advanced accident investigation techniques, program auditing, and emergency response/crisis management is required


• In-depth understanding of Kinross’ processes an asset
• Experience leading projects of varying scope and complexity
• Good written and oral communication
• Ability to work in a team environment
• Ability to learn quickly
