Based in Mauritania, Kinross Tasiast is set to become one of the great gold finds of our generation. It is the first mine in a highly prospective greenstone belt, located within an extensive gold system that is largely underexplored.

Job Description

Reporting to the Drill & Blast Superintendent, you oversee the technical design; implementation and monitoring of all drill and blast activities on site. You continually evaluate drill and blast performance and initiate improvements to achieve key outcomes.  To be familiar with and understand the principles of the Tasiast environment policy, and to maintain and support procedures and work practices aimed at preventing accidents or injuries.

Job Responsibilities

Includes but not limited to:

  • Develop Drill and Blast design criteria to support safe & optimal mine operations
  • Assist in Development and maintenance of the Tasiast Ground Control Management Plan
  • Plan & manage the design and implementation of the drilling and blasting field requirements
  • Conduct drilling and blasting support trials and making recommendations on their performance
  • Assist with continuous improvements in drilling and blast designs while ensuring they comply with mining regulations and site standards as they relate to Mine Safety and Geotechnical Wall Control blasting.
  • Coordinate with the Drill and Blast Superintendent to ensure maximum utilization of production drilling equipment as it relates to Production and Geotechnical Wall Control blasting.
  • Advise planning & operations personnel on issues relating to production drilling, blast and mine design
  • Provide technical support where electronic blasting is carried out
  • Ensure that drilling and blasting plans for the open pit operation are carried using appropriate software packages following the correct procedures and standards
  • Ensure that all reporting requirements and licensing conditions by regulatory bodies are met
  • Develop, maintain & update the Drill and Blast Management Plan
  • Plan the collection, analysis and interpretation of drilling and blast data
  • Provide comprehensive and timely contributions to the daily, weekly, monthly and annual reports
  • Conduct field trials to ensure maximum productivity is achieved through the monitoring of drilling and blasting consumables
  • Provide technical information on blast vibration as it applies to Geotechnical Wall Control practices
  • Assisting in developing drill and blast budgets and forecasts as required
  • Ensure fragmentation of blast optimizes downstream processes, eg mill throughput and productivity of diggers
  • Manage contract and performance of explosives provider
  • Improve the overall safety performance of the site including facilitating Job Safety Analysis’ and Serious Incident Analysis’
  • Promote the environment as an integral aspect to the department and ensure minimal disturbance to the environment
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the Mauritanian Mining Regulations & ensure compliance with same
  • Understand the Duty of Care requirements including the Tasiast Standards, Approved Codes of Practice, Industry standards and other legislation relevant to the area of responsibility.
  • Train and mentor national engineers in drill and blast engineering.

Education and Experience

  • More than 5 years mining experience in an open pit mine
  • Skills in planning, budgeting and forecasting
  • Effective decision making and problem solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to delegate and build positive relationship
  • Skills in training and or competence transfer
