Job Description

Global scope for exploration – greenfield and brownfield

Reporting to VP S&S, seconded to exploration

Oversight / support / expert role supporting exploration projects, to help them ensure work is planned and conducted in a manner compliant with Kinross standards and applicable local regulations

Job Responsibilities

Ensures roles & responsibilities for health/safety at all exploration activities are clearly defined, effectively communicated, and adhered to

  • For brownfield exploration, coordinates with site operations management
  • For greenfields exploration, coordinates with regional/country and project

Ensures each exploration project has appropriate h/s plans in place

  • Develops H/S requirements and evaluation criteria for exploration proposals and bids
  • Reviews contractor safety qualifications and management plans as part of bid analysis
  • Supports development of, and reviews, project risk assessments
  • Reviews project safety plans
  • Ensures competency of designated site H/S representative

Regular inspections of each project

  • Technical inspection of drilling equipment
  • Review of project risk assessment, management and monitoring of critical controls
  • Review project’s safe work instructions and recommend changes where required
  • Review training procedures
  • Conduct safety engagements, task observations, and other assessment of workers’ awareness of risks and their management
  • Confirm adequacy of project’s emergency response & access to medical care
  • Review adequacy of communications, camp conditions, etc.

Supports investigations of incidents

  • Participates in and/or leads investigations
  • With Project Manager, agrees to identified corrective actions
  • Verifies completion of corrective actions during site visits
  • Reviews overall performance of exploration activities across the company, and identifies trends / needs for improvement

Oversees reporting

  • Ensures appropriate information on safety performance (incidents, exposure hours, etc.) are reported per corporate standards
  • Ensures learnings from other sites (MIAs, etc.) and best practices are adequately communicated to exploration projects

Sustainability Expectations

Demonstrates visible felt leadership on safety and sustainability. Clearly communicates requirements, expectations, and observations to field personnel. Identifies issues that require management attention. Follows through to ensure expectations are understood, and that agreed actions are taken.


Scope of Responsibility & Complexity

This position provides management and critical support of matters relating to health and safety performance at exploration projects. Requires knowledge of exploration operations, safe work procedures, and risk assessment. Work is highly dependent on self-motivation, ability to work with minimal oversight, in all cultural and project contexts. Excellent proactive communicator, ensures that all parties are informed of current status, issues, etc. and able to influence behavior of employees and contractors.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Occupational health and safety or industrial hygiene or related field from an accredited university or college

5 years of mining / exploration safety and health experience.  In the absence of a formal degree, additional years of experience may be used to replace the need for a formal degree.

Certification through an accredited association such as CMSP, CSM, CSP or CIH is desired however an equivalent combination of training, education and experience may also be acceptable.


  • Role requires travel to exploration projects, more than 70% of their time
  • In-depth understanding of Kinross’ processes an asset.
  • English speaker, fluency in one of Kinross’ key languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic, Russian) is considered an asset.
  • Excellent written and oral communications ability
