Purpose of Role

To purchase all materials, goods and services for all operations, maintenance and support functions, following established policies, practices, and procedures when completing work assignments.

Key Areas of Responsibility and Duties

• Works under close supervision, orders materials and services, expedites and traces orders until delivery is complete or cancelled
• Provides timely assistance to all accounts payable inquiries and invoice variances
• Researches alternate vendor sources and competitive pricing to control costs while preserving quality
• Maintains professional and positive vendor and department relationships
• Reconciles questionable invoices with vendors and provides materials cost estimates when needed
• Coordinates and makes necessary arrangements for processing discrepancies on supplied items and materials and makes proper disposition on rejected items
• Participates in lead negotiations with suppliers
• Liaises with appropriate purchasing and/or production employees on site
• Escalates issues requiring advanced expertise or knowledge about the broader business impact of decisions. Works with a mentor on more advanced issues.
• Assists with special projects related to buying
• Performs data entry, typing, filing, and other clerical functions to maintain accurate records
• Uses computer purchase order system related to buying
• Analyzes information related to buying, which may include generating basic reports, reviewing them for accuracy, and monitoring overall quality



  • BA degree in business administration preferred
  • 2-5 years of related experience; previous experience in mining is preferred
  • Previous experience with the preparation of requests for quotations and quotation analysis


• Sound knowledge of computerized purchase order system and tracking with good data processing skills
• Sound knowledge of materials management, logistics, transportation, and governmental regulations concerning material shipments
• General knowledge of mechanical and chemical principles and terminology
• Must be able to work in a fast paced work environment

Reporting Relationships

• Serves as a resource to other members of the technical work unit
• Typically reports into the Supply Chain Supervisor / Superintendent / Manager
