Job Description

Based in Mauritania, Tasiast is the first mine in a highly prospective greenstone belt, located within an extensive gold system that is largely underexplored.  Kinross is currently investing in a two phased capital development program that will make Tasiast one of the top gold mines in the world and the group’s flagship operation.

 

This is a three year role with the objective of transitioning the function of Financial Controller from an expat position to a Mauritanian national.  Reporting to the Finance Manager, the role will be responsible for the training and mentoring of high potential Mauritanian nationals.  The key task areas should be performed by the Mauritanians identified as candidates to take over the Controller role with the coaching, mentoring and where required intervention of the Controller

Job Responsibilities

  • Timely closing activities and accurate financial statements preparation in both USD & local currency in compliance with IFRS and Mauritanian GAAP, respectively.
  • Timely completion and/or review of routine account reconciliations;
  • Compliance support for tax, government filings and other compliance reporting requiring financial data, including interface with government auditors and other government officials;
  • Support, coordination and primary contact for the various financial, tax and compliance audits related to financial data; 
  • Preparation of quarterly Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) and related disclosures; 
  • Adequate application and maintenance of financial controls under Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX); 
  • Completion and/or review of non-routine financial analysis requests from management at site, at the regional office and the corporate headquarters;
  • Ensure all accounting judgments and entries include the proper supporting documentation as required for IFRS, local GAAP and tax.
  • In cooperation with the regional office, help prepare budgets and forecasts.  Provide insightful analysis of variances between actuals and budget to aid management with optimal decision making.
  • Act as local champion of ERP system JDE.
  • Management and evaluation of a team of 12 national staff.
  • Documentation of all local finance function’s policies and procedures in compliance with Group policies and procedures.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from internationally reputed university.
  • Fully qualified accountant.
  • Big 4 background

2.            Functional job skills

 

  • Experience of working in mining sector.
  • Experience of ERP accounting packages, preferably JDE.
  • Advanced IT skills in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Experience of working in a multi-currency environment.
  • Experience of managing financial control systems and processes.
  • Ability to interpret complex regulatory environment and propose appropriate accounting solutions.
  • Up to date knowledge of IFRS and the African accounting framework OHADA.
  • Experience of French based taxation regulations.
  • Ability to learn quickly and act on new information.

 

3.            Leadership skills

 

  • Experience of supervising and mentoring staff in Central or West Africa.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and influence with a variety of people at all levels, internally and externally including the state administrations.
  • Ability to inspire and command respect through technical excellence in a large range of finance competencies.
