Job Description

The Chief Metallurgist is responsible for managing all metallurgical and laboratory services for Mining Tech Services, Processing and Dump leach ADR plants, ensuring all safety and production targets are met and continuous improvement is achieved. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Monitor the Metallurgical systems and business processes, identify and prioritise improvement opportunities and formulate alternatives and improvements to systems and methods.
  • Assist the Processing Manager with implementation of change management initiatives and other business improvement projects.
  • Develop, implement and maintain safe work procedures and promote safety, health and environmental awareness.  
  • Develop continuous improvement targets for the function and drive and measure achievement of these targets.
  • Ensure the development and maintenance of up to date job procedures for all tasks performed within the team.
  • Ensure effective communication of work and issues/conditions status  takes place with delegate prior to departure from site

  • Organise the work of the team to ensure all functions and services are provided efficiently, while providing rewarding work, with clear accountabilities and authorities 
  • Improve financial return of concentrate production through improvements in controls for marketing (concentrate quality and recoveries) and cost control strategies
  • Ensure accurate reporting of production activities
  • Oversee the metallurgical research and development program ensuring new and innovative ideas are capitalised for maximum benefit
  • Ensure the transfer of technology from expatriate to national employees and the promotion and support of national employee training and development.
  • Manage the Graduate program and liaises with the Mauritanian School of Mines


  • Manage the CMO requirements for the Metallurgy and Laboratory departments
  • Ensure personnel are adequately inducted in their work area and are aware of all workplace rules and critical procedures.
  • Actively contribute to safety policy and new initiatives and implement change as directed by the Processing Manager and management team.
  • Actively promote, monitor and enforce compliance of personnel with safe work practices.

  • Adhering to environmental procedures to ensure good housekeeping, resource conservation, spill prevention and the appropriate disposal of wastes.
  • Reporting all environmental incidents to supervisor after implementing immediate corrective action.

Employee Development

  • Manage the metallurgy and laboratory Mauritisation development plan
  • Provide training and coaching to all team members.
  • Ensure all members of the team have clearly defined accountabilities, roles and individual development plans.  
  • Provide feedback on performance and conduct formal performance reviews.

Education and Experience

  • Tertiary Qualifications in Metallurg
  • Min 10 years Gold experience.
  • Served in a similar position as Chief Met
  • Managed met and lab teams


Key Skills & Experience Required

Work Knowledge:

  • Leadership and management of metallurgy and laboratory functions within a gold processing operation
  • Knowledge of the storage, handling and use of reagents and the elimination of process waste
  • Metallurgical accounting best practices
  • Demonstrated success as an effective leader in a customer focussed environment.
  • Experience in managing costs and budgeting.
  • Demonstrated application of continuous improvement ideas.


Computer Skills:

  • Competent in the use of metallurgical accounting databases
  • Good computer skills with the ability to use integrated management systems, word processing, presentation and spreadsheet applications.
  • Experience in the use of an integrated management system such as JDE and Pi

Communication Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills
  • Able to read and write English, French an advantage
