Purpose of Role

The Employee Relations Director is responsible for coordinating and directing the employee relations programs and develop ER strategy in Africa Region.

These functions include responsibility for developing, interpreting and recommending program goals and objectives, policies and procedures, and courses of action. The incumbent is responsible for managing the employee relations activities according to established guidelines and sound administrative practices and in accordance with the organization's mission, values and goals.

It is essential the incumbent provides coaching and mentoring to the Sites ER team members to uplift their skill sets.

Main Key Areas of Responsibilities and Duties

  • Develops labor relations strategy and provides labor relations support during CLA negotiations at Site.
  • Provides advice and counsel to managers and supervisors regarding personnel practices and policy.
  • Effectively models and understands cost impact related to bargaining proposal/contract settlements.
  • Supports the development of staffing strategies at Sites.
  • Formulates and recommends program goals and objectives in all areas of employee relations.
  • Develops the management-labor relations area of the personnel program in an effort to improve labor relations.
  • Ensures company is in compliance with the collective bargaining agreement in every Site.
  • Provides guidance and recommendations for problem resolution to Site management.
  • Develops and maintain effective partnerships with management and ER teams on site to support the goal of resolving disputes in a fair, consistent, efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Provides expertise in strategy development, planning and facilitation of strategies to address potential problematic employee relations issues.
  • May coordinate various employee relations programs, i.e., employee orientation, benefits administration, employee policies and procedures, grievance and disciplinary action, and other programs as needed, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and regulations.
  • May lead or manage a team responsible for executing human resources strategy and / or manage consultants and other third party providers.
  • Prepares and presents required and special reports.

Required Qualifications - Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Labour/Industrial Relations, Business Administration, Psychology or another related area of expertise.
  • Additional specialized education of up to 4 years including Masters level degree or equivalent prefered
  • HR certification preferred.

Required Qualifications- Experience 

  • Generally more than 14 years of HR experience, ideally with a major company in the natural resources industry.
  • 12 or more years of Labor Relations experience required.
  • Solid experience acting as a business partner with senior management, providing coaching and guidance required.

Required Qualifications- Skills

  • Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Demonstrated ability to gain the trust and credibility of senior management.
  • Demonstrated negotiation, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking and business acumen.
  • Advanced proficiency in English, French is an asset.
  • Ability to compile and analyze business data for purpose of formulating labor strategies and managing cost impact of proposals/settlement to business.
  • Advanced presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Capability of building, leading and coaching a multi-cultural and diversified HR team.
  • Experience in Africa preferred

Travel Requirements

  • Although based in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, this position requires the flexibility and availability for the incumbent to frequently travel on sites in both Mauritania and Ghana.

Reporting Relationship

  • The position will report to the  Regional HR Director, Africa
