The Kinross Africa Regional Office is located in Las Palmas, Canary Islands, and is responsible for providing senior leadership and back office support to the gold mine sites located in Ghana and Mauritania.

Job Description

The Tax Accountant role, reporting to the Regional Tax Director, is based in the regional office and will be providing tax accounting support and analysis for the operating and development activities in the Africa Region, with a main focus on Mauritania.

The role consists in providing support and analysis of the day-to-day tax accounting matters related to Kinross’ operations in Africa (in particular in Mauritania), as well as support for income taxes, VAT, employment tax, customs duties and all other taxes. The role will require travel to operational site(s), in particular in Mauritania

Job Responsibilities

To co-develop, implement, and maintain business practices and policies concerning tax accounting and its day-to-day compliance and reporting for financial purposes.

  • Prepares the calculation for review by Regional Tax Director of quarterly and annual tax provisions, which includes the preparation of the quarterly corporate tax packs and the UTP reports under IFRS (using group reporting software/templates)
  • Analyses all other tax accounting aspects, including the reconciliation of all tax related general ledger accounts
  • Follows up on other tax matters, including withholding tax(es), Royalties, employment income taxes and VAT. This included close collaboration with local tax and finance team.
  • Reconcile recharges for transfer pricing purpose;
  • Assists the functional lead as needed in forecasting, planning, analysis, and research for Kinross’ African operations;
  • Helps ensure timely and accurate completion of the tax-related to Kinross’ annual operating and capital budgets in Mauritania, consistent with Kinross’ established financial guidelines and business planning process;
  • Assist in providing timely and accurate guidance to the site management in tax aspects of financial justification for capital expenditures, ensuring that all tax consequences are captured in the economic justification;
  • Assists with tax audits, disputes and appeals and with other correspondences on tax matters, requiring accounting analysis skills;
  • Assists with the development, implementation and maintenance of best practices to minimize tax risk;
  • Implements processes, policies, systems, and practices that maximize operational efficiencies and competitive advantage;
  • Responsible to provide timely and accurate guidance to the site departments and contractors with regards to tax processes and compliance requirements, monitors those processes and reports to functional lead;
  • Proactively develops collaborative relationships with all other functions / departments, and, as needed, with stakeholders related to effective tax compliance;

To assist in developing and implementing long-term strategies for Kinross’ Mauritanian tax obligations.

  • Assists in developing financial strategies and practices to ethically optimize Kinross’ effective tax rate and cash taxes;
  • As needed, assists functional lead in projects affecting Mauritania (and as the case may be other African projects), advising on the relevant tax aspects in matters, including acquisition structures, reorganizations, and legal contracts

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Tax, or Accounting (this position requires to be very comfortable with numbers analysis)
    • At least 5 years of related work experience, including Big Four experience or experience in the tax department of a publicly-traded company
    • A thorough understanding of IFRS and a high knowledge level of tax accounting
    • Experience in preparing quarterly tax provisions
    • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently in English. Ability in French language is an asset.
    • A strong familiarity or understanding of Mauritanian accounting legislation and compliance issues (or of another French-based system in North/Western Africa)
    • Team player. Ability to work effectively both in a team environment and individually
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently and work to deadlines
    • Additional specialized education including a master’s level degree or equivalent an asset
    • Professional accounting designation (CA, CMA, CGA, CPA) an asset
    • Mining industry experience an asset
    • Advance level in MS Excel
    • Ability to travel internationally.
