PT Freeport Indonesia’s various Grasberg site operations consist of a number of world-class mines that are targeted to produce 240,000 tons of copper-gold ore daily.  These include the Grasberg Open Pit, the DOZ panel cave and the Big Gossan open stope mine.  Equally important are the mines under development and study.  Development is well-advanced at the GBC panel cave mine and the DMLZ panel cave mine and studies are being initiated for the Kucing Liar panel cave mine.  Current mine plans call for the Grasberg pit to be complete by 2018 at which time production will solely be from underground with production ramping up to 240,000tpd by the middle of the next decade as GBC and DMLZ panel caves are brought on line.  The approximate CAPEX is in excess of $10b and when at full capacity the Grasberg Block Cave mine will be one of the largest underground operations in the world, delivering the future of PT Freeport Indonesia.
The Underground Mine Geology Team has a major role in mine development and operations. Proper management of our geologic data collection, analysis and storage is essential.
Additional responsibilities:
  • The Technical Expert Mine Geology role exists to ensure critical aspects of mine geology are undertaken “in-house”.  The intent of the role is to:
    1. Develop, refine and implement underground mine geology methods and procedures
    2. Transfer geologic operations knowledge to develop skills and competencies of our Indonesian National staff geologists
    3. Focus on applied geological mapping and evaluation techniques
    4. Build, transfer data into and manipulate 3-D geomodels
    5. Provide strong analytical skills in data analysis and visualisation
•             Understand and be aware of safety and environmental practices in the various work areas to ensure safe work practices for you and your colleagues in compliance with company Safety and Environmental SOPs 
•             Provide expert advice to ensure that best practice geological knowledge is applied site wide
•             Train Indonesian national geologists in best procedures to ensure reliable data collection, recording, compilation and reporting according to mining industrial standards (e.g., JORC)
•             Monitor and participate in the collection and plotting of geological field data with emphasis on structural geology
•             Conduct regular field inspections to ensure procedures are being followed and to identify & correct procedural problems
•             Keep up-to-date with industry standard practice of geologic data collection; inform our geological staff regarding relevant geology research mining papers, articles, and encourage Indonesian geologists to participate in international and national geological and mining forums
•             Develop and coach national staff to build capacity, ensure knowledge transfer and that analyses and recommendations from our Underground Geology Team follow international best practices 
•             Provide professional advice / recommendations to PTFI leadership and supervisory staff 
•             Assist in the development of the Underground Geology team, which provides technical raw and processed data, advice and support to Underground Operations
•             Perform technical work for the DOZ, DMLZ and GBC caving operations and for the Big Gossan stope mining operations, all of which are within PTFI’s Grasberg business unit
•             Assist in the development of partnering arrangements with key specialist providers, such as geotechnical and geostatistical modelers who may reside off site
•             Assist in mentoring programs for Indonesian national geologists
•             Reporting to Manager of Underground Geology
•             Collaborative and influencing functional peer relationships with geology, hydrology and geomechanical teams within PTFI’s underground projects and open pit operations: 
•             Collaborate with our corporate resource estimations and exploration teams
•             Close alignment with Mine Engineering, Geomechanical, Hydrology and Operations teams to achieve common goals


  • Bachelor’s Degree (S1) in a Geosciences field with a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in the mining industry with focus in underground mining
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others and communicate complex issues
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills
  • Strong analytical thinking skills
  • Ability to work in a culturally diversified workforce
  • Strong computer skills
  • Strong English skills, both oral and written
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • High level communication and presentation skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic level of the Indonesian language in understanding and oral (preferable but not essential)
  • Master’s Degree or PhD in a Geosciences field
