Manager - Corporate Development (Geologist)

Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

The Kinross Corporate Head Office is located in downtown Toronto and supports Kinross operations and projects worldwide. Corporate functions include Finance, Procurement, Health & Safety, Human Resources, IT and Investor Relations.

Job Description

Provide financial and technical leadership in the Corporate Development group.  Contribute to the identification, evaluation and execution of mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, divestitures and equity investments.  Manage key workflows, including the preparation of complex financial and technical models, research, analysis, and the preparation of presentations and reports.  Contribute to business and project planning by assisting in the preparation of various analysis and materials for the Senior Leadership Team and Board of Directors.  Recommend and implement best practices in Corporate Development.  

Job Responsibilities

  1.  Identification, evaluation and execution of corporate development opportunities
  1. Prepares business cases and reports regarding potential opportunities, including recommendations and status updates
  2. Leads or assists with the management of financial and technical due diligence processes in the evaluation of potential opportunities
  3. Participates in site visits in order to assess of opportunities
  4. Assists with the management of transactions by preparing confidentiality agreements, engagement letters, data packages, and proposal analysis
  5. Liaises with Kinross colleagues, investment bankers and other corporations to keep abreast of developments in the mining industry and potential opportunities

 

  1. Lead advanced financial and technical modeling analysis
  1. Applies advanced knowledge of finance and mining in the preparation of complex analytical models
  2. Participates in strategic business and project planning through financial and technical leadership
  3. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to achieve project goals
  4. Actively supports annual corporate model updates, including fair value testing,   incorporation of strategic opportunities and business plans

 

  1. Application of advanced knowledge to support financial and functional planning
  1. Supports the preparation of periodic reports to the SLT and the Board of Directors
  2. Assists with the maintenance of various financial models and reports, including the equity investment portfolio and the Corporate Model
  3. Contributes to special projects and analysis, as required

 

Scope of Responsibility & Complexity 

Work is performed under limited direction according to established methodologies and processes. Problem resolution is within established guidelines and procedures, requiring the use of judgment to determine which methods are applicable in any given situation. Work is complex involving routine problems or studies. Seeks assistance from others when dealing with unfamiliar or problem situations. Ensures projects are completed in a timely manner, and to required standards. Initiates, implements, evaluates and modifies own projects and plans in response to needs. Supervises and directs the work of the Corporate Development Analyst or Summer Student, as required.

Education and Experience

University degree in geology, finance or commerce
Accounting designation, MBA, CFA or similar certification in valuation an asset
7+ years of related work experience in both the financial sector and in exploration/mine geology 
Transaction analysis experience including developing and analyzing financial models
High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office –Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Understanding of financial statements and capital markets
Previous experience supporting major initiatives such as an acquisitions or partnerships
Advanced project management skills

 

Additional Qualifications & Skil Requirements

Previous experience in the mining industry and/or in capital markets is preferred

Experience leading projects of varying scope and complexity

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Ability to learn quickly

Strong attention to detail

Flexibility in a fast-paced environment 

 

Competency Requirements 

Financial or technical background and ability to understand and apply financial theory or technical outputs to transaction analysis

Ability to write business reports on transaction opportunities for senior colleagues\

Demonstrates an understanding of the mining industry and an ability to contribute to related discussions

Establishes networks and relationships in the mining industry, helping to identify and develop opportunities

Ability to analyze and synthesize information quickly and correctly

Exhibits a high level of professionalism and accountability
