This position is based at our Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation, located approximately 120km north of the Lao capital, Vientiane.  Phu Kham is a conventional open pit mine producing approximately 90,000 tonnes of copper concentrate annually.  The process plant, upgraded to a design capacity of 19 million tonnes per annum, comprises a SAG mill and two ball mill grinding circuits, each rated at 13 mega watts, with copper and precious metal recovery by flotation.   

 

Reporting to the Geology Superintendent, you will be expected to identify opportunities and deliver improvements in a number of core activities including: planning, implementation and execution of drilling programs, construction of grade control block models, maintenance of drilling and sampling databases and reconciliations of metal forecasting tools. As the Senior Geologist, you will be responsible for leading a multi-cultural team of expatriate Geologists and Lao technicians.

 

Your key responsibilities will include:

 

  • Plan, implement and execute the drilling programs
  • Perform geological mapping, wireframe and interpretation to enhance understanding of geological control on ore and waste
  • Provide grade control modelling and minimise ore perimeter design loss and dilution
  • Liaise with drilling contractors and supervision of contractor pit activities inclusive of sampling practices and sample recovery
  • Train and supervise Lao staff across mapping, wire-framing and domaining, database management and QAQC interrogation, grade control model creation
  • Participate in reconciliation processes for identification of improvement areas
  • Maintain current daily, weekly and monthly reporting and participate in budget and forecasting exercises
  • Provide technical support i.e. ore-blocking and mine reporting to the Production Geology section
  • Provide technical and geological support to other PBM Departments as required
     

To be successful in this role, you will require:

 

  • Degree qualification in geosciences
  • Considerable experience in mine geology for an open-cut mining operation
  • Proven experience and understanding of Surpac, Datamine or similar mining software package
  • Strong skills in grade control modelling coupled with excellent analytical and interpretation skills
  • Demonstrated capability in delivering improvements at a Senior level
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English
  • Unwavering commitment to safety and the development of our National employees
