This is an exciting time to join PanAust, a copper and gold producer in Southeast Asia, with operations in Laos delivering strong production and cost performance. In addition, the Company is advancing the development of the Frieda River Copper-Gold Project in Papua New Guinea. PanAust holds an 80 per cent interest in this project, one of the largest known undeveloped copper and gold deposits in the world, which will become a long-life open-pit operation. The strategic direction of the Company is to maximise returns from its producing assets while advancing pre-development projects that offer potential to sustain and grow the business in the long term.

Based in our corporate office in Brisbane, this role reports to the General Manager, Technical Services and provides technical expertise and support for all aspects of open-pit mining.  This includes technical support to the existing operations in Laos, development of the mine plans for the Frieda River studies and supporting corporate development activities.


This is an outstanding opportunity for an accomplished Principal Mining Engineer or Technical Services Manager with a depth of open-pit operating experience and technical expertise to deliver the strategic and tactical objectives for the technical support and studies group.


Your key responsibilities will include:


  • Lead, communicate and deliver all aspects of PanAust’s life of mine planning process including the integration of mine plans with tailings storage facility construction, waste rock storage and mine closure plans
  • Plan, budget and implement the timely and cost effective delivery of mining-related tasks to support scoping, prefeasibility and feasibility study activities in accordance with PanAust’s Project Governance Standard
  • Scope and coordinate the activities of consultants for work programs such as geotechnical and groundwater investigation, equipment selection and operating and capital cost estimation
  • Undertake quarterly mine site visits with operational peers to analyse mine performance data to identify, recommend and support operational improvement initiatives
  • Maintain and validate mining performance and cost models
  • Prepare Ore Reserve estimates for existing operations and projects as the Competent Person under industry codes of practice.   
  • Develop and maintain PanAust group technical standards for open-pit mining.  Routinely audit compliance against these standards.


To be successful in this role, you will require:


  • Relevant tertiary degree qualification in mining engineering or related discipline
  • Significant experience and expertise in mine engineering and technical services
  • Experience in site-based roles in metalliferous open-pit operations, with some underground experience desirable
  • Experience in technically challenging ore bodies in high rainfall environments is also desirable
  • Demonstrated experience in project evaluation studies and operational improvement
  • Proficiency in mine planning and open-pit optimisation software (Surpac, Vulcan, Whittle, etc.)
  • A high level of personal discipline, motivation and drive
  • A focus on safety, risk management and efficient use of company resources
  • The ability to build effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders through skilled communication, collaboration and mutual respect, including cross-cultural understanding
  • Exceptional analytical capability and report writing skills
  • An astute commercial focus, professional judgement and attention to detail
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills with an ability to manage competing priorities to meet agreed deadlines
