Job Description

The candidate will work on major brownfield and greenfield projects to provide Instrumentations and controls engineering expertise.  To participate in business and / or project planning on key projects by providing technical and cross-functional expertise. Ensures quality standards are upheld in their field of specialization. Provide continuous improvement within Instrumentations and Controls engineering fields across all Kinross sites. The initial focus will be on the Tasiast 30K expansion project.  The role will report to the Director of Global Electrical Engineering, and work closely with the EPCM consultant and other members of the Owner’s team.   

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead key technical projects requiring I&C engineering input/oversight, including defining and achieving project goals, anticipating and minimizing risks, project management, managing resources and EPCM consultants.
  • Review of Functional Description and Control Narratives for process control systems and assist in implementation at the mine sites
  • Provide guidance to third party consultants during the commissioning of process control systems, create punch list modifications and upgrades 
  • Review project documents (policies, standards, specifications, drawings, PFDs, P&IDs, data sheets) related to instrumentation and control systems to assure they meet project and Kinross objectives.
  • Review commissioning plans  
  • Review cost estimates for I&C prepared by EPCM consultants.
  • Assist commercial teams with technical support in procurement related to I&C packages
  • Interface with the Site Operations team
  • Seek and implement opportunities to add value to the project
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams and influence others to achieve project goals often without direct authority.
  • Acting as an advisor/mentor to more junior team members
  • Prepare business cases, capital costs and reports regarding projects and initiatives and presents recommendations and status updates
  • Take coordinator role in construction and commissioning of instrumentation and process control systems.
  • Acts as a change agent for areas related to specialized area, including assessing readiness to engage in change efforts and designing and executing change strategies and how they may affect Kinross, and make recommendations to Management. 

Scope of Responsibility & Complexity

  • Problem resolution involves a high degree of independent judgement to interpret policy in situations where considerable variation in interpretation is possible.
  • Applies theoretical concepts or original approaches to complete projects or assignments.
  • Work is assessed based on attainment of objectives and effectiveness of results.

Ensures quality standards are upheld in their field of specialization. Directs the work of project teams and / or task forces.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or Instrumentation and Controls engineering
  • Formal professional designation in electrical or Instrumentation and Controls engineering
  • Experience in PLC programming, SCADA and DCS configuration, network setup and commissioning
  • 15 – 20 years of related work experience
  • Experience with selection, engineering, and installation of control systems in mining and processing plants.  
  • Experience managing EPCM firms, for projects of varying scope and complexity from planning to commissioning stages
  • Familiarity with Electrical Distribution systems (desired)
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of large multi-disciplinary teams
  • International experience in multiple regions
  • Project management and operational experience
  • Bilingual in one of languages of Kinross sites an asset

  • Able to travel internationally for short periods
  • Team player with a strong inclination towards developing co-operative solutions
