Job Description

To provide global technical leadership in mechanical engineering; to develop and implement corporate policies, standards and specifications related to mechanical engineering. Act in a role as Owner Engineer rep overseeing mechanical discipline activities on major greenfield and brownfield capital projects.  Ensures quality standards are upheld in the field of specialization.  To participate in medium to long-term business and / or project planning on key projects by providing technical and cross-functional expertise.  To manage the work of EPCM consultants.    

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead key technical projects requiring mechanical engineering input/oversight including defining and achieving project goals, anticipating and minimizing risks, project management, managing resources and consultants. 
  • Review project documents (policies, standards, specifications, drawings, data sheets related to mechanical systems to assure they meet project objectives.
  • Review cost estimates prepared by EPCM consultants.
  • Interface with the Site Operations team
  • Seek and implement opportunities to add value to the project
  • Support in construction and commissioning of projects (short term visits)
  • Provide cost, scope and schedule control support as required by the project circumstances or directed by the Engineering Manager.  This may include disciplines other than mechanical. 
  • Review existing corporate documents (policies, standards, specifications) related to mechanical engineering; lead the process of making updates and communicate to staff across all sites.
  • Assist commercial teams with technical support in procurement efforts related to mechanical procurement packages
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams; influences and persuades senior management decisions that have an impact on business direction and influences others to achieve project goals often without direct authority.
  • Act as an ambassador for continuous improvement within mechanical engineering.   
  • Prepare business cases, capital costs and reports regarding projects and initiatives and presents recommendations and status updates to management
  • Take coordinator role in construction and commissioning of mechanical systems.
  • As Engineering Manager on selected projects, co-ordinate and direct work and of all engineering disciplines, often being the prime contact with the external engineering firm.

Scope of Responsibility & Complexity

  • Problem resolution involves a high degree of independent judgement to interpret policy in situations where considerable variation in interpretation is possible.
  • Applies theoretical concepts or original approaches to complete projects or assignments.
  • Work is assessed based on attainment of objectives and effectiveness of results.

Ensures quality standards are upheld in their field of specialization. Identifies and resolves complex technical, operational and project management problems.  Directs the work of project teams and/or task forces.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering
  • Formal professional designation in mechanical engineering
  • 15+ years of related work experience, with several years in a supervisory role
  • Good understanding of mining and processing equipment.  Experience with sizing, selection, engineering, construction and commissioning of relevant mechanical systems.  
  • Experience with mechanical engineering aspects of projects of varying scope and complexity from planning to commissioning stages. 
  • Experience with engineering management of large projects.  This includes development and management of scope of work, schedules, budget as well as co-ordination.  Working with engineering consultants, vendors, contractors and other stakeholders. 
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of large multi-disciplinary teams
  • International experience in multiple regions
  • Project management experience
  • Operational experience
  • Bilingual in Portuguese, French or Russian an asset

  • Strong communications and presentation skills, especially working with multi-disciplinary teams in multiple locations 
  • Works well in a structured, corporate environment
  • Flexibility
  • Able to travel internationally for short periods
  • Team player with a strong inclination towards developing co-operative solutions, especially in situations where do not have direct authority.
