Job Description

Geological information management is an essential element of the Exploration activities and programs. 

The Exploration Database Administrator (DBA) provides technical support to the Exploration team and all of the Exploration activities, including drilling, sampling, mapping, logging and analysis of information.  

The DBA ensures an efficient flow of data in and out of the geological database, monitors Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC) programs, administers GIS data, promotes technical excellence and seeks improvements, and assists with the design and development of processes, practice and methodologies to ensure that best industry practice is in place.

Job Responsibilities

Includes but not limited to:

  • Maintain database data entry, import and query objects, updating or developing new objects as workflow requires.
  • Maintain and develop web reporting interface for database.
  • Ensure access to data is available for department personnel from various modelling and GIS software utilizing system interoperability tools.
  • Support geologists and technicians with data entry and consumption tools.
  • Import analytical data and other geological data as required.
  • Perform QAQC checks on analytical data, flagging and resolving issues with the laboratory.
  • Validate all geological and analytical data using existing tools and reports, developing these as necessary.
  • Manage spatial data within the GIS, including importing, analyzing, and validating data.
  • Develop and produce thematic maps at deposit and regional scales.
  • Maintain and develop remote and web-based access to GIS data.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly reports.
  • Update database system and GIS software as required, and utilize additional functionality within the software as they become available.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • 2 years of relevant work experience (database management/administration).
  • Demonstrable knowledge of database software.
  • Experience with Mining, Exploration and/or GIS software.
  • Understanding of QA/QC protocols as related to mining industry.
  • Knowledge of Mining and Exploration industry practices.
  • Team player with a strong inclination towards developing co-operative solutions.
  • Technical report writing and presentation skills.
  • Communications skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English and French.


• Ability to learn quickly
• Strong working knowledge or high degree of interest in analysis and reporting
• Solid understanding of performance tuning concepts and tools
• Comfortable working in multiple simultaneous initiatives
• Knowledge of information technology
• Knowledge of database and project management

  • Targeted training in field of database administration.
  • Experience administering a geological database.
  • Experience with current software suite (acQuire, Micromine, MapInfo, ArcGIS).
  • Knowledge of SQL and ability to design database scripts and queries.
