Manager of Mining

Location: Tasiast, Inchiri region, Mauritania

Job Description

The Manager of Mining is directly accountable for the health and safety of all members of the Mine Operations Team, including contractors and sub-contractors. He must manage actions of himself and others to achieve conformance with the TMLSA Safety Management Plan, the Ground Control Management Plan, Risk Management practices, compliance with Legislation, Internal Rules, Policy and SOPs to safeguard the health and safety of persons in, on, about, or affected by the operations of the mine.  He must also ensure sharing of information relevant to achieving this outcome.

He is responsible to manage, plan and direct all aspects of the Mining Operations, ensuring the safe, profitable, timely and cost-effective execution of the Short & Long-Term Business Plans, and the Budget, ensuring progressive, sustainable improvements within the department consistent with the business objectives.

Job Responsibilities

HSE

  • Demonstrated full compliance with Cardinal Rules, Site Standards, Internal Rules, Policies and Procedures;
  • Ensure resources are provided to the work place that will result in a safe and healthy working environment;
  • Develop and implement Continuous Improvement Processes at all levels of the mining operations;
  • Establishment of specific, individual safety responsibilities for Supts  and Supervisors, and process for regular monitoring;
  • Undertake, where practical, practice runs of emergency responses;
  • Act in Emergency situations;
  • Develop, approve, implement and monitor controls required for risk management.
  • Approve the action to rectify deficiency and remedial action to prevent potential noncompliance
  • Verify that the disposition of the noncompliance, and the implementation of the appropriate remedial action, is satisfactory
  • Design, develop, implement and assign appropriate responsibilities for adequate and regular inspections, monitoring and assessment of the working environment, work procedures equipment and installations at the mine. 

Mine Plan Optimization 

•Active involvement in the annual planning process and development of long term operational strategies;

•Conduct equipment and truck requirement reviews, in conjunction with Tech. Services Manager;

•Demonstrated improvements in drilling and blasting practices to the operational benefit of Tasiast;

•Achievement of Budget fleet utilization and productivity targets;

•Completion of tailings dam embankment to schedule.

•Improve the effective utilization of the truck dispatch system to improve overall fleet productivities;

•Reduce Absenteeism rate;

•Active participation in scheduled production and planning meetings;

•Identify risk and opportunities in the plan in a timely manner;

•Direct and control production plans to meet targets;

•Establish processes which ensure meeting or exceeding contract milestones;

Education and Experience

  • BSC in Mine Engineering preferred
  • Additional specialized education of up to 4 years including masters level degree or equivalent
  • Formal professional designation in appropriate area of expertise
  • 10 or more years of related work experience, with experience working in remote locations on a rotational schedule
  • At least 3 years expatriate experience at same or similar level
  • Experience managing diverse employees (language, cultural, religious, etc)
  • Experience leading teams in a related environment

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS & SKILL REQUIREMENTS


  • Must possess knowledge of engineering techniques as they apply to ore body evaluation and mine operations
  • Must possess general knowledge of mining and the integration of the mining, milling, and maintenance functions
  • Basic working knowledge and skills with a PC utilizing word processing and spreadsheet programs
