The Kinross Africa Regional Office is located in Las Palmas, Canary Islands, and is responsible for providing senior leadership and back office support to the gold mine sites located in Ghana and Mauritania.

Job Description

Reporting to the Regional Director External Affairs, and working in close cooperation with General Managers, regional functional groups and Kinross Corporate Communications, this role is responsible for implementing communication  strategy locally and delivering industry-leading best practices and expertise in enhancing the organization’s relations with its employees and its various stakeholders; providing strategic direction and effective leadership for internal and external communication activities in Kinross’ West Africa Region.

Job Responsibilities

Regional communication strategy and regional team leadership

  • Manages communication teams at regional sites by ensuring compliance with corporate procedures (“External Relations Protocols”), project leadership, consistency in communications contents and supports, and by actively supporting them in the management of tools and procedures;
  • Creates and executes strategic and tactical communication plans at regional sites to support and advance regional business objectives, in line with overall corporate communication objectives and guidelines;
  • Advises and supports members of the Regional Leadership Team in their communication needs, with a specific focus on communications related to and from the Regional Vice-President;
  • Supports the Regional Vice-President to ensure that sites and regional offices are informed with the latest corporate disclosures (quarterly news releases and specific new releases in relation with the Region). 

Sites communication

  • Provides on-going and regular on-site support to Tasiast and Chirano
  • In partnership with the General Managers and Heads of Departments, creates and executes strategies and tactics aligned with Chirano and Tasiast’s business objectives to better engage its employees in achieving improvements in individual and collective performance
  • Leads the communication strategy related to Chirano’s Social Closure Plan and Foundation Project.

Education and Experience

• University degree(s) in related field of study


  • Five years related work experience
  • Direct experience working with media
  • Previous experience in the extractive sector preferred
  • Work experience in Africa  preferred


  • Proven ability to create and implement effective and realistic communication plans for multiple audiences, including employee communication
  • Proven success leading team to deliver effective communication products/projects/events
  • Strong speaking and writing skills in English and French
  • Comprehensive knowledge of communications media and emerging trends
  • Proven ability to manage complex issues in dynamic, multi-stakeholder environment
  • Experience in an industrial setting
  • Although based in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, this position requires the flexibility and availability for the incumbent to spend around 30% of his/her time at the Tasiast site in Mauritania and travel on  to Ghana
  • A good handle of  “social media” and/or “digital communications” preferred

Media relations

  • Develops and executes strategic media plans and provides guidance and hands on support to regional communication personnel in ongoing media relations
  • Acts as spokesperson on regional issues and ensures training of local/regional spokespeople as required
  • Ensures constructive relationship with regional media and generates proactive opportunities at regional site
  • Monitors regional media coverage in order to rapidly disseminate important news within company as needed
  • Develops effective public messaging in response to new and emerging regional and site  issues 

Public relations

  • Advises the Region in terms of participation to regional events relevant to Kinross
  • Leads participation to public relations events, including the production of communication contents and supports

Internal communications

  • Leads development of internal communications strategies and action plan to assure regional employee alignment with corporate values and regional business strategy
  • Provides communication support for regional HR team

Brand/reputation management

  • Ensures consistent and effective application of corporate communication policies and brand standards at regional level
  • Effectively integrates advertising, media relations, social media, etc to enhance overall reputation and communicate key brand attributes
  • Provides regional communication support to key business functional areas including community relations, recruitment, and investor relations
