Senior Exploration Geologist - Burkina Faso

Teranga is a multi-jurisdictional West African gold company focused on production and development as well as the exploration of more than 5,000km2 of land located on prospective gold belts. Since its initial public offering in 2010, Teranga has produced more than 1.3 million ounces of gold from its operations in Senegal. 


Focused on diversification and growth, the Company is building it’s first gold mine in Burkina Faso (Waghnion Gold Operations) and is currently conducting extensive exploration programs in three countries: Burkina Faso, Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire. 


This is a 2 year contract in Burkina Faso with some travel to Cote D’Ivoire.    This is fly in/ fly out roster of 8 weeks on / 4 weeks off with travel in company time.


Summary of the role;

As the Senior Exploration Geologist this position will support the Exploration Manager with the planning and execution of exploration programmes efficiently and cost effectively. Generate high quality exploration targets, plan, prioritize, evaluate, and direct exploration work, manage projects within a given geological/geographical area or mining district. Ensure that all data are collected, accessed/validated and interpreted and produce geological and other technical documents.


Key responsibilities:

·         Assist with the development of exploration plans, adapting these plans to changing budget constraints.

·         Complete geology models and report for hand over to resource group.

·         Ensure the sample and data flow chain of custody remains intact with full documentation trail accessible to auditors.

·         Regular Quality Control reporting of the data received (from Field & Laboratory) and timely notification and rectification of any problems.

·         Ensure field and laboratory data is captured in the database with a minimum delay; reviewed and assessed prior to entry into the GIS database.

·         Review geological data on an ongoing basis to ensure that information is always current.

·         Maintain a set of quality up to date maps and sections of the project data from regional to prospect scale.

·         Ensure all data is accurate and plotted on high quality, standardised maps and sections and interpreted to build geological and structural models that can guide further exploration and prioritisation.

·         Assist the Exploration Manager with summary presentations and drafting of public releases.

·         Regularly report results and updates to the Exploration Manager.

·         Ensure quarterly, annual and renewal reports to the governments are completed and submitted in a timely manner.

·         Ensure JV reporting technical and financial is completed at the end of each quarter.

·         Ensure high quality, comprehensive technical reports are completed at least annually or more frequently when requested.

·         Monitor of expenditure against budget

·         Mentor and motivate staff; geologists and technicians working on the projects to ensure continuous improvement of work output and quality.

·         Ensure staff and contractors adhere to the company’s safety, environmental and community policies.




·         Minimum Bachelor Degree in Geology is required. A Masters in Exploration Geology would be considered an asset.

·         15+ years as a professional Geologist in minerals exploration in a large open cut mining operation.

·         Good understanding of greenstone belt and gold deposit geology essential.

·         Previous experience with management of large drilling, mapping and geochemical programs.

·         Experience working in developing countries and mentoring Geologists at all levels

·         Mining or resource modelling background useful.

·         Keen interest in and experience in comprehensive data integration and interpretation.

·         Candidate needs to be able to synthesise large complex data sets to develop drill targets and set priorities.

·         Previous experience supervising, mentoring and training a team of local staff, contractors and labourers.

·         French language skills an asset
