Manager of Mining Services

Location: Tasiast, Inchiri region, Mauritania

Based in Mauritania, Kinross Tasiast is set to become one of the great gold finds of our generation. It is the first mine in a highly prospective greenstone belt, located within an extensive gold system that is largely underexplored.

Job Description

The Manager of Mining Services is directly accountable for the health, safety, daily activities and performance of all members of the Mine Services Teams (Drill, Blast, Pit Dewatering, Training), including contractors and sub-contractors. He must manage actions of himself and others to achieve conformance with the TMLSA Safety Management Plan, the Ground Control Management Plan, Risk Management practices, compliance with Legislation, Internal Rules, Policy and SOPs to safeguard the health and safety of persons in, on, about, or affected by the operations of the mine.

He is responsible to manage, plan and direct all aspects of the Mining Services, ensuring the safe, profitable, timely and cost-effective execution of the Short & Long-Term Business Plans, and the Budget, ensuring progressive, sustainable improvements within the department, consistent with the business objectives.

Job Responsibilities

The over-riding objective of this role is the sustained, long term maximization of production in a SAFE manner. If any parameters can be exceeded, they will be to the maximum extent within the bounds of SAFE practices.

Lead a challenged and motivated team focused on cross departmental support and on implementing & sustaining business wiring, improvement processes and coaching to drive bottom-line results within operations:

  • Mine Optimization:
    • Drill and Blast – Optimize improvements in the dewatering, drill preparation, blasthole drilling and blast charging processes. Improvements to include increased integration of dewatering functions, implementing drill and blast quality KPIs, process optimization to increase drill-time and blast process auditing.
    • Manages all aspects of the Pit Dewatering program, ensuring that Drilling and Loading activities are never compromised by high in pit water levels
    • Implementation of management control improvements to improve the Pit Dewatering program and minimize the impact of ground water on D&B and Mining operations
    • Detailed management control improvements of the hauling fleet and dump management processes to increase haul truck utilization, productivity, and effectiveness.
  • Operational Wiring
    • Implementation of a process to be used to create operational guides for areas of the operation requiring improved management control through integration of review meetings, audits, procedures and detailed accountabilities
    • Implementation of SPIN, short interval control process, working with peers to improve productivity and efficiency of production performance.
    • Design of a process to be used to create operational guides for areas of the operation requiring improved management control through integration of review meetings, audits, procedures and detailed accountabilities, including but not limited to Labor productivity, Capital Expenditure, Energy Management and Contractor Management.
  • Succession Planning:
    • Work closely with peers to determine optimal ex-patriot skillset requirements and deliver structured development program and succession plan for the National workforce.
  • Cost Reduction:
    • Implementation of departmental wiring and lead Mine Operations continued efforts to maintain an ideas pipeline focused on sustainable reduction in mining costs.
  • Unit Cost Reduction:
    • Completion of a mining diagnostic of operational unit cost reduction opportunities.
  • Business Capability:
    • Implementation of an integrated Management Operating System, focused on improved active supervision, operational analysis and operator training by clarifying mine reporting and personnel accountabilities.
    • Implementation of Departmentwide results and progress meetings in order to align teams, drive accountability and resolve issues.

Education and Experience


  • BSC in Mine Engineering preferred
  • Additional specialized education of up to 4 years including masters level degree or equivalent
  • Formal professional designation in appropriate area of expertise


  • 10 or more years of related work experience, with experience working in remote locations on a rotational schedule
  • At least 3 years expatriate experience at same or similar level
  • Experience managing diverse employees (language, cultural, religious, etc)


  • Must possess general knowledge of mining and the integration of the mining, milling, and maintenance functions
  • Basic working knowledge and skills with a PC utilizing word processing and spreadsheet programs
  • Advanced technical and operational capabilities
  • Experienced problem solver delivering superior operational and business outcomes
  • Committed and effective leader with excellent communication skills
  • Highly competent in the application of business improvement methodologies
