Purpose of Role

To perform and oversee activities related to the mine engineering team and to ensure service and operating standards are met (internally and externally). To design and develop processes, practices and methodologies for the mine engineering department. To lead the execution of the strategy for mine engineering team. To ensure continued growth of the team and to maximize operational efficiencies, safety, and profitability. 

Key Areas of Responsibility & Duties 

To execute and oversee activities related to the mine engineering team

  • Independently handles underground mine designs and related schedules, dumping designs and schedules, and Life of Mine Plans
  • Using advanced professional knowledge, acts as an advisor to a variety of internal and external requests such as to identify and analyze business requirements and the implications for the team; identifies gaps and implements agreed upon solutions; makes recommendations for opportunities that maximize efficiency and productivity of the entire operation
  • Proposes new work approaches, methods, and policies to optimize performance and to ensure adherence to industry regulations and organizational standards
  • Contributes to the development of policies and practices related to mine engineering that contribute to effective mine engineering
  • Keeps on top of trends related to mine engineering and incorporates this information into work assignments and approach
  • Monitors costs related to projects, mine plans and equipment replacement analyses and implements approved recommendations for maximizing operational efficiencies
  • Assigns tasks to less experienced employees and provides mentorship and guidance on complex or escalated issues
  • Actively seeks mentorship and learning to improve product or technical knowledge and skillset
  • Participates in task forces related to area of expertise
     

To analyze information and prepare technical documents to support decision making

  • Investigates, researches and analyzes information and issues related to mine engineering
  • Prepares business cases regarding projects and initiatives and presents recommendations and status updates to key stakeholders
  • Prepares technical reports and documentation to ensure compliance with industry and operational requirements
  • Develops accurate mineral model(s) for use in planning and reserve / resource calculations
  • Prepares resource / reserve estimations and annual technical report 

To communicate information related to mine engineering

  • Assists with training and skill development on technical issues in mine engineering
  • Provides information on operating standards, compliance requirements and policies
  • Manages design, bidding, and contracting of multi-million dollar construction projects
  • Provides support, as needed, to other departments on monthly reporting 

To lead and execute mine engineering strategy

  • Identifies strategies and key performance goals and acts as an advisor to direct reports; works to overcome challenges and barriers, and minimize risk
  • Sets performance targets and measures, monitors, and manages the overall performance of the team and direct reports
  • Builds the capabilities of the team to enhance their ability to achieve the financial and operating strategy.
  • Identifies key performance measures for the team; monitors and reports on the achievement of targets, and revises strategies as needed

Adheres to all safety and environmental considerations. Wears PPE at all times while in production environment. Is alert and observes, corrects and reports unsafe conditions. Follows operating procedures and complies with all regulatory requirements. 

Scope of Responsibility & Complexity

Work is complex and performed under limited direction. Problem resolution is within established guidelines and procedures, requiring the use of judgment to determine which of many methods are applicable in any given situation. Seeks assistance from others when dealing with unfamiliar or problem situations. Proceeds on own initiative but supervisor is available to provide direction in the amendment / development of new practices and procedures. Work is reviewed for attainment of objectives, adherence to policies, procedures and timelines.

 

Minimum Qualifications & Skill Requirements

  • BSc in Mining Engineering or equivalent work experience
  • Additional specialized education of up to 4 years
  • Registration as a professional mining engineer is preferred
  • 5 – 8 years of related work experience
  • Must be skilled in VULCAN, AutoCad and Microsoft Office programs

 

Additional Qualifications & Skill Requirements

  • In-depth understanding of Kinross’ processes a definite asset
  • Experience in underground mining strongly preferred
  • Ability to learn quickly
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets
  • Should be skilled in economic evaluation and sensitivity analysis of projects and plans, including cashflow analysis and rate of return calculations
  • Knowledge of engineering techniques as they apply to underground mine design, mine planning, equipment analysis, and project management
