Exploration Manager - Brownfields - Tasiast, Mauritania

Location: Tasiast, Inchiri region, Mauritania

Based in Mauritania, Kinross Tasiast is set to become one of the great gold finds of our generation. It is the first mine in a highly prospective greenstone belt, located within an extensive gold system that is largely underexplored.

Job Description

Kinross is looking for a highly motivated and experienced mineral exploration professional to act in a senior leadership role at its flagship Tasiast project in Mauritania. 

Responsible and accountable for overseeing the effective execution and management of all aspects of the exploration/geoscience programs at the Tasiast project. 

The successful candidate will be a dynamic, seasoned exploration professional with proven leadership skills, a track record of discovery, and the ability to collaborate across the organization.  

Combines the highest standards in environment, health and safety and stakeholder relations with strong technical expertise to ensure that exploration and geoscience programs are planned, resourced and executed in a safe, efficient and effective manner consistent with Kinross’s priorities, culture and values. 

Requires significant interactions and collaboration across various components of Kinross’s business, including Technical Services, Mine Geology, Operations and Projects functions. 

Delivers value to the company through the sound application of geoscience in the context of the company’s long term strategy and near-term business objectives, spanning project generation through discovery, as well as resource definition and development. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for coaching, mentoring, and leading the local staff in the areas of skills development and performance management. 

Job Responsibilities 

  • Manage the business of mineral exploration within the defined jurisdiction including administrative, governance, technical requirements and initiatives;
  • Promote the company’s commitment to health and safety, sustainability, the environment and ensure Kinross’s standards are met at the project;
  • Manage a local team of geoscientists, support and administrative staff and provide coaching, training and leadership in terms of employee development;
  • Works closely with local team to identify opportunities, evaluate programs, and provide oversight on planning and execution of mid- to long-term exploration programs;
  • Build a culture of teamwork across all constituents and stakeholders and encourage cooperation and communication

Education and Experience

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in mineral exploration; previous experience in related, senior roles will be considered an asset. 
  • A university degree in geoscience; a relevant, advanced degree will be considered an asset
  • Registered membership in a Professional Association
  • Experience managing multi-rig exploration drilling programs (Reverse Circulation and Diamond Drilling)
  • Proficient level of experience with standard industry Mining & Exploration software, such as; Micromine, Datamine, Surpac, Vulcan, MapInfo, ArcGIS, Leapfrog
  • Experience administering or using standard Industry database software; Acquire, Datashed, Fusion, etc 
  • Experience in Geological and/or Resource Modelling
  • Broad understanding of Quality Assurance and Quality Control programs
  • Experience working on magmatic-hydrothermal ore-forming systems and clear understanding of relevant and current mineral deposit models
  • Experience working in granite-greenstone terranes and orogenic gold systems
  • Solid understanding of economic geology principles
  • Ability to work effectively at a variety of scales and ability to lead and have oversight of multiple projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated experience of effectively leading and managing people and teams as well as driving change
  • Results oriented with excellent organizational, planning, management and decision making skills
  • Excellent communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills and experience working with a broad range of people
  • French language skills will be considered an asset
  • International (expat) experience will be considered an asset, ideally West-Africa
