Environment Superintendent

This is an exciting time to join PanAust, a copper and gold producer, with operations in Laos and a large pre-development project in Papua New Guinea. PanAust’s producing assets in Laos are the Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation and the Ban Houayxai Gold-Silver Operation, managed by our subsidiary company, Phu Bia Mining. Both of these operations are delivering strong production and cost performance. PanAust holds an 80 per cent interest in the Frieda River Copper-Gold project in Papua New Guinea, one of the largest known undeveloped copper and gold deposits in the world, which will become a long-life open-pit operation. The strategic direction of the Company is to maximise returns from its producing assets while advancing pre-development projects that offer potential to sustain and grow the business in the long term.


Reporting to the Environment and Closure Manager, you will be responsible for leading a range of environmental activities that include waste and recycling management, rehabilitation and erosion control, monitoring and inspection around the mine site and surrounding areas impacted by Phu Bia Mining’s operations. We are seeking an experienced environmental leader who will play an important role in ensuring that we continue to meet world class standards during the remainder of our mine life through to closure.

 

Your outstanding leadership and coaching skills will be critical to the ongoing development and performance of the environment. This is an excellent opportunity to really make a difference and see your team grow and develop as a direct result of your efforts.

 

Your key responsibilities will include:

 

  • Develop and contribute to strategies for continual improvement of environmental aspects of the mining operation

·         Audit and monitor compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, statutory codes, acts, regulations using a risk based approach

·         Inspect, consult and liaise with operational personnel (including all site contractors) to ensure companywide sustainable development policies and procedures are adhered to safely

·         Supervise the existing extensive environmental monitoring programs on site (relating to land management, water quality and aquatic biological monitoring, noise and dust)

·         Oversee other environmental aspects including waste management and environmental reporting for site

·         Planning and supervision of land management, site reclamation, and rehabilitation programs

·         Manage section specific budgets to ensure objectives are achieved with budget constraints

  • Lead, motivate and coach local environmental staff

 

To be successful in this role, you will require:

 

  • Degree level qualification in Environmental Science or similar
  • Extensive experience leading environmental programs for mining or similar heavy industry essential, with previous experience in mine closure and rehabilitation activities an advantage
  • Proven effectiveness in leading and developing teams
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills to communicate and engage with a range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Unwavering commitment to safety

Our Ban Houayxai Gold-Silver Operation is located approximately 120km north of the Lao capital, Vientiane. Ban Houayxai is an open cut mine with a Carbon in Leach (CIL) process plant, with annual production targets of approximately 100,000 oz gold and 780,000 oz silver from processing 4 to 4.5Mtpa of ore.
