Job Description


To coordinate activities related to the execution of the strategy for the short range mine planning team and to ensure service and / or operating standards are met (internally and / or externally). To contribute to the design and development of processes, practices and methodologies in the mine planning team. To ensure continued development of the team and to maximize operational efficiencies and profitability.

Job Responsibilities


To develop and implement business practices within mine planning that align with the organization’s overall strategy

  • Assist in implementing processes, policies, systems, and practices within mine planning that contribute to effective mine planning.
  • Assist the project sponsor for key initiatives; maintains and works within the organizational values, cultural, and prioritizes business goals.
  • Collaborate with the technical services team to identify and analyze business requirements and the implications for the team; identifies gaps and implements agreed upon solutions.
  • Ensure key performance measures for the team are met; monitors and reports on the achievement of targets and revises plans as needed.

 To coordinate activities related to mine planning

  • Create weekly work schedules based on monthly production targets.
  • Create monthly work schedules based on budget and forecast production targets.
  • Develop mine plans within the processes, policies, systems, and practices within mine planning group that contribute to effective mine planning.
  • Analyze and interpret information in reference to mine planning.
  • Research information to support decision making and improve processes, technologies or methodologies.
  • Contribute to the development of policies and practices in the mine planning department.
  • Prepare communication materials, such as mine planning documents as they relate to the planned operations.
  • Keep abreast of trends related to mine planning and incorporates this information into work assignments and approach.
  • Actively seek mentorship and learning to improve product or technical knowledge and skill set.
  • Responsible for the preparation of short-term mine plans and schedules, and integrates them with the long-term plans and designs.
  • Design dumps, access roads, and ramps, and mine site facilities.
  • Determine rock type characteristics and the relationship with mill grinding, and the potential pit limits.
  • Suggest changes to model criteria based on comparisons with mine performance.

 As a team member be responsible for developing mine plans and developing strategic options

  • Identifies planning options and key performance goals and acts as a liaison to operations; works to overcome challenges and barriers and minimize risk.
  • Sets performance targets and measures, monitors, and manages overall performance of the operation.
  • Monitors key performance measures for the operation; monitors and reports on the achievement of targets and revises strategies as needed.


Education and Experience


  • BSc in Mine Engineering or equivalent
  • Formal professional or technical registration in appropriate area of expertise
  • 3 – 5 years of related work experience with a minimum of 2 years in an active planning role at an operating mine is preferable
  • Previous experience in the mining industry is essential
  • In-depth understanding of Kinross’ processes a definite asset
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets
  • Knowledge of engineering techniques as they apply to ore body evaluation and mine operations



  • Strong engineering skills, a working knowledge of surveying, computer applications, and mine design, geostatistical modelling techniques, mine equipment capabilities, and production rates
  • Proficiency with SURPAC, Datamine, Minesched, Whittle 4X and other mining computer programs
  • Ability to read and write in English
  • Ability to communicate in French and/or Arabic would be a definite asset
