Under general supervision, identify, report and recommend corrective action for a wide variety of workplace occupational health risks that may adversely impact employee safety and health, comfort and productivity at assigned site.
  • Conduct and document qualitative and quantitative health risk assessments, analyses of operational procedures, equipment and materials, audits and incident investigations
  • Analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw conclusions
  • Develop and recommend appropriate controls for occupational health hazards
  • Review and approve/reject chemicals for use on site
  • Maintain a current knowledge of Freeport-McMoRan, OHSAS 18001, OSHA, MSHA and other regulations and standards
  • Assist site management in complying with Freeport-McMoRan, OSHA, MSHA and other regulations and standards
  • Prepare reports and present them to management in an comprehendible manner
  • Communicate effectively in one-on-one and group situations, both verbally and in writing
  • Serve as technical expert in chemical analysis, equipment and processes
  • Perform sampling and chemical analysis and maintain inspection records
  • Perform other duties as requested

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, or closely related Scientific or Technical discipline and three (3) years of experience in Mining or Heavy Industry, OR
  • Master's degree in Industrial Hygiene, or closely related Scientific or Technical discipline and one (1) year of experience in Mining or Heavy Industry
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws, ordinances, statutes, regulations, rules, policies and procedures
  • Technical expertise in chemical analysis, equipment and process
  • Thorough understanding of regulations and the regulatory process
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in one-on-one and group situations, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of management
  • Ability to analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw conclusions
  • Ability to perform sampling and chemical analysis and to maintain inspection records
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions



  • Previous experience in mining, heavy construction/industry or a lab/chemical environment
  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English
  • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
  • Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment 
  • Work is performed in a mine or manufacturing plant which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see
  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy to heavy objects up to fifty (50) pounds during the course of the workday
  • Personal protective equipment is required on a regular basis, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves, and other protective equipment as required
  • Freeport-McMoRan promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing and on-going random drug testing as per applicable State Laws

  • Positions which are held by employees who operate equipment, machinery or motor vehicles in furtherance of performing the essential functions of their job duties, including operating motor vehicles while on Company business or travel (for this purpose “motor vehicles” includes Company owned or leased motor vehicles and personal motor vehicles used by employees in furtherance of Company business or while on Company travel); or
  • Positions which Freeport-McMoRan has designated as safety sensitive positions in the applicable job or position description and which upon further review continue to be designated as safety-sensitive based on an individualized assessment of the actual duties performed by a specifically identified employee.
