Job Description


  • Manage and ensure environmental monitoring requirements of the Tasiast operation are met and provide routine technical support to the environment team
  • Complete work assignments following established policies, practices and procedures.
  • Ensure safe and efficient operation of sampling equipment and vehicles to complete routine sampling, inspections,and monitoring.
  • Ensure that Environment Department personnel collect, evaluate and report multiple environmental monitoring datain accordance with Tasiast and Kinross commitments and complete work in accordance with Tasiast procedures and relevant regulations.
  • Communicate, coordinate training and interacts with all departments to ensure environmental compliance.

Job Responsibilities


General Responsibility


  • Comply with all Tasiast Health and Safety requirements, policy commitments, Kinross Corporate standards, and legal or other obligations
  • Working independently/with limited supervision, complete environmental management activities across the mine
  • Water Management: With support from relevant Superintendent coordinate and manage specific aspects of water monitoring activities including accurate and timely processing of all environmental sampling, testing, analysis and reporting
  • Air Quality Management: With support from relevant Superintendent coordinate and manage specific aspects of air quality monitoring activities
  • Waste Management: With support from relevant Superintendent coordinate and manage specific aspects of waste management activities
  • Archaeology/Cultural Heritage Management: With support from relevant Superintendent coordinate and manage Cultural Heritage activities
  • Assist with environmental incident investigations and manage reporting according to relevant regulations
  • Actively participate in training of fellow employees in environmental monitoring, management and other environmental requirements as necessary
  • Promote excellence in environmental management and ensure that all employees are held accountable for maintaining high environmental standards


Health and Safety Responsibilities



  • Establish and ensure personnel work to appropriate standards when on site and when working with communities to prevent as reasonably practical accidents, injuries and negative environmental impacts
  • Monitor the department safety record and inform department employees of deficiencies prior to the close of each month
  • Ensure employees complete safety training as required follow up as required


Technical Responsibilities



  • Management, coordination and/or monitoring of specific aspects of Water Quality, Air Quality, Waste management,Cultural Heritage Management and other relevant Environmental Managements activities as and when arising
  • Coordinates and participates in routine inspections of mine and satellite infrastructure
  • Review and interpret operational and monitoring data to ensure that applicable standards and requirements are met
  • Advise on environmental controls to improve environmental performance or reduce environmental risk
  • Follows established policies and procedures related to collecting samples and results, and complies with established methodologies and quality standards
  • Ensure that the Environmental Monitoring Program is conducted in accordance with the commitments specified in the Tasiast Environmental Monitoring and Environmental Management Plan
  • Conduct monitoring program to improve environmental performance and better understand the environmental impact or risk of site processes and activities
  • Ensure monitoring program is reviewed annually based on changes to the mine plan (including closure plan), Kinross guidelines or government regulations
  • Oversee the monitoring teams to ensure accurate monitoring data collection based on sampling and measurement procedures and to ensure proper implementation of QA/QC protocols
  • Prepare reports of the data results according to Environmental Department or Company requirements such as monthly, quarterly, annual and special reports

Education and Experience


  • Bachelor degree (BAC +4) or MASTER (BAC +5) in Science, Environmental Management or a related discipline. Candidates with engineering degree should have a strong environmental science background
  • 3+ years’ experience conducting environmental management related activities such as permitting , compliance etc ...
  • 2 years’ experience of the implementation and management of environmental monitoring programs
  • Excellent  ability to speak and write French, English and Arabic
  • Valid Mauritanian Driver’s License
