Job Description:

Reporting directly to the Chief Geologist the incumbent is responsible for implementing the Strata Control function

in their respective areas to provide assistance to the operations within his/her responsibility with regards to

geotechnical engineering design layouts and support systems that meet Operational requirement.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Support
    • Assist the Geotechnical Engineer to ensure sufficient and appropriate geotechnical data is collected, captured and validated to facilitate geotechnical designs that conform to international best practices.
      • Geotechnical drilling
      • Material testing
      • Validated database
      • Compliance to GTS assessment        
  • Compliance
    • Provide input into the layout design models of new operations and input into the formulation of support
    • standards.
    • Interact with Service departments such as Mine Planning, Geology and Survey.
    • Ensure that mine plans, geotechnical engineering standards and Mine Code of Practices related to
    • Geotechnical Engineering are signed off.
    • Oversee the design layouts and supports systems developed by Strata Control Officer and ensure integrity
    • and laboratory testing on rock samples through performing rock or stress testing.
    • Ensure and monitor legal and Code of Practise (COP) compliance for Geotechnical Engineering and rock
    • related codes of Practices, standards and procedures are updated and implemented.
    • Communicate changes to legal requirements and provide input into risk assessment regarding
    • Geotechnical Engineering requirements
    • Ensure provisions of regulations related to Geotechnical Engineering are fully complied with as well as
    • perform fatality and fall of ground investigations.
    • Conduct routine or ad-hoc visits to all sections on the operation and audits of sections to ensure
    • compliance to Geotechnical Engineering standards.
    • AFRS understanding & keeping up with all documentation.
      • Compliance to SIO COP to combat rock falls
      • Contribution to mine layout and design
      • Improvements found for reserve utilisation
      • Research and Development completed
      • Accuracy of rock and stress testing reports
      • Integrity of design
      • Developing geotechnical engineering design parameters
      • Policies, standards and procedures signed off and implemented
      • Percentage compliance of COP with DMR guidelines
      • Required Risk Assessments in place
      • Legal Compliance
      • No or Minor findings during external and internal audits
      • Implement geotechnical engineering action plans
      • No uncontrollable falls of ground injuries
      • Effective monthly geotechnical engineering SHE
  • Inspections
    • Conduct daily visual stability assessments
    • Conduct daily loading point inspections
    • Ensure that daily quality checks on drill blocks are done
    • Conduct daily operator hazard awareness training
    • Conduct over inspections as required
      • Daily reports
      • Monthly reports
  • Pit Boundaries
    • Implement and monitor Final Pit Boundary Mine to design process.
    • Ensure that all final pit boundaries are mapped and post excavation analysis conducted.
      • Monthly OPCO report.
      • Post excavation analysis done
      • Final pit boundary mapped
  • Slope Stability
    • Ensure an appropriate level of slope stability monitoring is undertaken.
    • Oversee the integrity of data collected and determine impact / effectiveness of mine designs based on stability monitoring.
    • Test effectiveness of systems by conducting routine evacuation drills
      • Compile and revise slope stability monitoring strategy
      • Routine pit evacuation drills
  • Initiate and implement continuous improvement efforts
    • Implements CI initiatives by keeping abreast of developments and introducing change in work processes where appropriate (cost reductions and cost avoidances).
      • Effective/appropriate new ideas identified and implemented
  • Carry out Administrative duties
    • Review and update relevant policies and procedures in line with governance principles and changes.
    • Maintain records and filing (computer and hard copies)
    • Attend production meetings as and when required.
    • Generate reports as and when required by various parties.
      • Monitor expenditure on monthly basis
      • Available, neat and reliable record keeping
  • Manage and control budget/costs
    • Estimate annual financial requirements for the department.

Requirements: Qualification and Skill

  • Chamber of Mines Strata Control Certificate
  • AA plc Safety & Risk Management
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in Geotechnical Engineering / Rock Engineering field in the Mining Industry
  • Experience in production Environment in the mining
  • Knowledge specific to the position
    • In Depth understanding of relevant safety and mining legislation including
    • The Mine Health & Safety Act
    • Good Knowledge of safety and sustainable development policies, procedures and standards
    • Knowledge of Operations and Geotechnical Engineering codes of practices, policies and procedures
    • Knowledge of geotechnical engineering practices, principles and processes
    • Basic understanding of the risk assessment process
    • Understanding of Geotechnical Engineering best practices and new technologies
    • Knowledge of mine planning principles
