CHIEF GEOLOGIST - RESOURCE ESTIMATION - PHOENIX, AZ

Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Geology department, including the direct coaching of personnel involved in the design and execution of resource estimation, resource modeling, development and mine geology programs. Provide technical analysis and feedback to operating units to enhance the efficient and optimal mining of resources.
  • Oversee the geological evaluation and resource modeling estimation studies for the mining, exploration and technical services groups
  • Direct the evaluation and analysis of Model-Mine-Mill processes and reconciliation to prevent negative impacts
  • Prepare the 10K Ore Reserve statements for review by the Senior Management Team
  • Communicate resource estimation information regularly to management level to keep them informed of progress, problems and proposed solutions
  • Supervise, train and develop Senior Geologists in the procedures to ensure consistent and accurate geological models, resource estimates and reporting
  • Monitor and review documentation and reports of model development and resource estimation
  • Review the development of practical procedural manuals for geologic resource estimation so that procedures can be clearly understood by both technical people and clients
  • Perform other duties as required 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology or related Mining Engineering discipline and seven (7) years of Resource Estimation experience, OR
  • Master's degree in Geology and five (5) years of Resource Estimation experience
  • Ability to meet qualification as a "Competent Person" under the JORC rules for the reporting of Mineral Resources
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of geology and mining
  • Knowledge of the geology of porphyry and skarn hosted copper and gold systems
  • Understanding of JORC, SEC, International and Indonesian Mineral Resource Classification and reporting standards
  • Fluent in English (written and verbal)
  • Skill in the practical application of resource estimation and geostatistics, working in multiple commodities
  • Skill in mineral resource modeling and three-dimensional geologic problem solving
  • Super-user in the operation of at least one of the major 3D Modeling software packages
  • Must be willing and able to learn to use Vulcan modeling software exclusively
  • Demonstrated ability in the production of technical reports
  • Good problem solving and judgment skills
  • Ability to work to a deadline
  • Ability to teach and develop staff in technical skills
  • Ability to communicate highly technical procedures and results to others both inside and outside the immediate group

Qualifications

 

Preferred

  • Master's degree in Geology or Mining Engineering
  • Eight (8) to ten (10) years of overall experience in Geology, Exploration or Mining
  • Experience in Ore Control and Short Term Mine Planning
  • Extensive UG mine geology experience, especially structural and geological mapping
  • Drill core logging interpretation and re-logging from core photos
  • Working experience with ethnically and culturally diverse staff
  • Ability to travel internationally up to 25% of the time

  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English
  • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
  • Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment
  • Position is in busy, non-smoking office located in downtown Phoenix, AZ
  • Location requires mobility in an office environment; each floor is accessible by elevator
  • Must be able to frequently sit, stand and walk
  • Work will be occasionally performed in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
