Water & Tailings Management Specialist - Longeuil office

The Role:

Reporting to the Director Metallurgy, the Water & Tailings Management Specialist acts as a subject-matter expert to sites for maintaining environmental and tailings management programs, systems and permit compliance for both operating sites and project developments. The incumbent works closely with internal and external stakeholders along with regulatory and review committees and permitting consultants to ensure proper designs and management processes are put in place to comply with environment regulations and to obtain & maintain related permitting. The incumbent will also lead the identification and establishment of best practices, and cost-effective and environmentally compatible solutions to key risks and effective mitigation strategies.

Your Responsibilities:

Key Area: Provide assistance and governance to Mine Operations team, Geotechnical, Project and Planning group within the Site Engineering Departments especially for but not limited to: pit dewatering, mine and dump drainage. (Ground Water)

Duties:

Establish groundwater systems design criteria.
Ensure that engineering designs are sound from hydrogeological aspects.
Review field programs for groundwater studies including hydraulic conductivities, gradients and groundwater flow velocities, and other parameters affecting groundwater movement in and around active mining areas and operation of large tailings storage facility.
Lead hydrogeological studies, review results and articulate recommendations for improvement and/or problem solving and/or risk mitigation.
Lead groundwater modeling studies and articulate recommendations to sites.

Key Area:

Duties

Ensure proper designs are put in place to comply with environment regulations and to obtain & maintain related permitting. (Water & Tailings Management)
Review field programs for tailings storage facilities geotechnical studies. Lead results interpretation and provide geotechnical guidance for studies and project execution.
Establish hydraulic structure design criteria and review field programs for hydrogeological studies.
Ensure proper designs and systems are in place to manage process, tailings, mine and site waters.
Assess and provide geochemical recommendations for projects & operations.
Supervise tailings and geotechnical management by implementing MAC guidelines for tailings management
Provide support to smaller projects within the engineering department as required.
Provide guidance and governance to sites in preparation for annual budgeting and LOM costing.

Key Area

Duties: Identify best practices and ensure policies and procedures are designed to translate IAMGOLD’s Zero Harm vision into actual and sustained performance.

Support sites with respect to ISO 14001 certification.
Ensure follow-up and resolution to address non-compliance situation and mitigate risk including problem solving and tracking the progress to solution.
Establish and maintain relationships with cost-effective preferred vendors.
Act as an internal consultant/subject-matter expert and resource for senior leaders and the global Environmental and Metallurgy teams.


Qualifications

What we look for:

Engineering BSc and graduated studies in Geo-technical engineering or Hydrogeology or Hydrology and will have demonstrable experience in the field.

Minimum of 15 years associated with Geotechnical and Hydrogeology, field investigations, analyzing data and developing conceptual models for tailings and water management at mine site.

Experience in design and construction of Tailings Dams.

Sound understanding of hydrogeology, hydrology and geotechnical engineering.

Ability to evaluate geo-technical risks arising from construction methods, designs, ground water conditions, and other technical factors and set up an appropriate hydrogeological and geotechnical investigation campaign.

Field experience in techniques for pumping tests and data acquisition.

Experience in design and construction of water wells.

Experience in operation of tailings management facility.

Experience in tailings deposition planning.

Experience in design and construction of spillways and channels.

Ability to communicate technical information in a simple and effective manner.

Knowledge of mining economics for long term planning applications.

Highly developed decision-making and problem solving skills.

Ability to build effective relationships with key stakeholders, operators and government officials

Fluent in French and English.
