Job Description


This Environmental Specialist position is responsible for environmental management activities including the provision of biodiversity and cultural heritage management advice, plans and monitoring to ensure compliance with regulation, IFC and Kinross requirements. The position will also be responsible for sustainability reporting and identifying opportunities for improving resource management. This position reports to the Environment Lead.

Job Responsibilities



Technical Responsibilities

  • Implement and maintain the Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) and Biodiversity Monitoring and Evaluation Plan (BMEP).
  • Provide advice to the operation regarding assessment of impact of activities on biodiversity matters and how to avoid, mitigate, manage and offset.
  • Provide annual reporting on biodiversity and cultural heritage matters; including tracking disturbance to ecosystems / fauna habitat, offset performance and management, and any archaeological investigations undertaken.
  • Provide input into operational, decommissioning & reclamation plans regarding fauna and flora habitat and archaeological locations.
  • Provide biodiversity and cultural heritage spatial data for spatial mapping by department specialists.
  • Coordinate and track the management of deliverables, implementation and updates to key operational biodiversity and cultural heritage documents.
  • Coordinate compliance with land disturbance obligations (e.g. offset plans and rehabilitation) and tracking and reporting on progress.
  • Provide support and advice on any changes to regulation about biodiversity and cultural heritage legislation.
  • Develop scopes of work for baseline studies, biodiversity monitoring, or cultural heritage assessments and ensure implementation as required.
  • Represent the company in meetings with stakeholders and government officials regarding biodiversity and cultural heritage.
General Responsibilities


  • Comply with all Tasiast Health, Safety, and Environmental requirements, policy commitments, Kinross Corporate standards, and legal and other obligations
  • Assist with incident investigations related to ecology, biodiversity and cultural heritage and report according to relevant regulations
  • Actively participate in training of fellow employees in biodiversity and cultural heritage management practices and other environmental requirements as necessary
  • Promote excellence in environmental management and ensure that employees are held accountable for maintaining high environmental standards as required by the Environmental Policy.
  • Develop and review management plans, standard operating procedures, and monitoring reports applicable to biodiversity, cultural management, and other environmental management activities as required.
Health and Safety Responsibilities


  • Follow all Tasiast safety procedures, including Cardinal Rules, and report any safety concerns to the Environment Lead or Superintendent.
  • Conduct hazard identification and risk assessment; including Take 5, Job Safety Analysis (JSA) prior to undertaking work.
Minimum Qualifications & Skill Requirements


Technical Knowledge and Skills Required


  • Must have experience in identifying flora and fauna species found in Mauritania.
  • Technical ecology/biodiversity expertise with ability to assess and provide advice regarding species habitat and ecosystem function, as well as avoidance, management mitigation and offsetting of environmental impacts.
  • Experienced conducting field work/surveys for biodiversity
  • Must have basic knowledge and understanding of Environmental Management practices in an industrial, mining and/or operational environment and associated principles
  • Basic understanding of mining and processing operations
  • Knowledge of Mauritania specific environmental regulations, applicable mining sector regulatory requirements, IFC Performance Standard 6, and knowledge of government agencies
  • Proficiency with relevant supporting technical and general software
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, strong leadership, team building, and interpersonal skills, and technical writing skills
  • Strong computer skills to utilize standard Microsoft Office software package
  • Strong understanding of compliance and risk management, safety culture and environmental auditing procedures
  • Excellent communication skills with colleagues and government officials and regulatory bodies
  • Ability to explain environmental monitoring procedures and purposes in clear concise manner
  • Well-developed problem solving and organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage own workload and prioritize tasks according to company needs
Minimum Qualification and Skills Required


  • MAITRISE (BAC +4) or Master (Bac +5) in Ecology, Biology or a related discipline.
  • 6+ years’ experience conducting ecology or biodiversity related activities
  • Excellent ability to speak, read and write French and Arabic
  • Good ability to speak, read and write English
  • Valid Driver’s License
