Job Description

 

This Environmental Specialist position is responsible for environmental activities including the implementation and maintenance of the site environmental management system (EMS), coordination of permitting activities and conducting compliance activities including tracking of obligations and auditing.  This position reports to the Environment Lead.

Job Responsibilities

 

 

Technical Responsibilities

  • Implement and maintain the Tasisat Environmental Management System (EMS) including the update of programs, plans, and procedures.
  • Provide training to employees and management on environmental management standards.
  • Conduct audits of conformance to internal requirements and compliance to legal requirements.
  • Conduct internal inspections to Tasiast and contractor facilities onsite
  • Track and update the status of compliance obligations on a regular basis.
  • Provide frequent reports on the status of EMS implementation and maintenance

  • Maintain the document control system for HSE documentation.
  • Represent the department in meetings with government officials regarding permit applications.
  • Provide support on internal and external regularly reporting
  • Support the environment technicians as required with field sampling activities.
General Responsibilities

 

  • Comply with all Tasiast Health, Safety, and Environmental requirements, policy commitments, Kinross Corporate standards, and legal and other obligations
  • Actively participate in training of fellow employees in environmental management practices and other environmental requirements as necessary
  • Promote excellence in environmental management and ensure that employees are held accountable for maintaining high environmental standards as required by the Environmental Policy.
  • Develop and review management plans, standard operating procedures, monitoring reports and other environmental management activities as required.
Health and Safety Responsibilities

 

  • Follow all Tasiast safety procedures, including Cardinal Rules, and report any safety concerns to the Environment Lead or Superintendent.
  • Conduct hazard identification and risk assessment; including Take 5, Job Safety Analysis (JSA) prior to undertaking work.
Minimum Qualifications & Skill Requirements

 

Technical Knowledge and Skills Required

 

  • Experienced with the implementation and maintenance of ISO14001:2015 Environmental management systems — Requirements with guidance for use.
  • Able to interpret environmental requirements and develop audit protocols for evaluating conformance to standards.
  • Experienced in conducting internal audits of environmental management standards, procedures and legal requirements.
  • Knowledgeable of Mauritanian environmental legislation and government departments related to environment activities. .
  • Must have basic knowledge and understanding of Environmental Management practices in an industrial, mining and/or operational environment and associated principles
  • Basic understanding of mining and processing operations

  • Proficiency with relevant supporting technical and general software
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, strong leadership, team building, and interpersonal skills, and technical writing skills
  • Strong computer skills to utilize standard Microsoft Office software package
  • Strong understanding of compliance and risk management, safety culture and environmental auditing procedures
  • Excellent communication skills with colleagues and government officials and regulatory bodies
  • Ability to explain environmental monitoring procedures and purposes in clear concise manner
  • Well-developed problem solving and organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage own workload and prioritize tasks according to company needs
Minimum Qualification and Skills Required

 

  • MAITRISE (BAC +4) or Master (Bac +5) in Environmental Sciences or a related discipline.
  • 6+ years’ experience conducting environmental management related activities
  • Excellent ability to speak, read and write French and Arabic
  • Good ability to speak, read and write English
  • Valid Driver’s License
