Job Description

Provide leadership and specialized technical expertise in an area including, but not limited to:  water management, biology, biodiversity, soil science, climate, mine closure, geochemistry, permitting and/or compliance. Leads the design and implementation of environmental projects and manages environmental functions and resources to assist mine management to achieve production targets within budget without compromising environmental requirements and license to operate. Provide advice and recommendations on global trends and emerging technologies that can create efficiencies or a key competitive advantage. Encompasses all sites and will require some travel.

 

Job Responsibilities

Leads technical environmental projects including identification of needs, scope definition, resourcing, contractor management, quality control and reporting

Develops and implements systems, standards and processes across the business, including providing site support, ensuring site understanding and buy-in, and compliance with Kinross environmental requirements

Identifies emerging challenges and develops, communicates and implements plans to avoid or mitigate potential negative outcomes

Contributes to and supports the strategic direction of the business in relation to environmental management across Kinross’s operational sites

Acts as a change agent for areas related to specialized technical area, including assessing readiness to engage in change efforts and designing and executing change strategies

Collaborate with the Senior Manager Safety and Sustainability Audit to undertake regular reviews and audits of environmental controls, procedures and practices as required

Identify research and development opportunities that contribute to the understanding of environmental issues and can lead to an improvement in environmental performance

Maximize synergies between environmental and community relations programs within the Safety and Sustainability umbrella

Manage the flow of information between the sites; drive and facilitate discussions around best practices

Respond to a variety of internal and/or external requests, many of which will not be standard and will require advanced problem-solving approaches

Prepare communication materials, manuals, and other written materials related to environmental management, including specialist reports (where applicable)

Actively seek mentorship and learning to improve product or technical knowledge and skill set

Adheres to all safety and environmental considerations. Wears PPE at all times while in the production environment. Is alert and observes, corrects, and reports unsafe conditions. Follows operating procedures and complies with all regulatory requirements

Education and Experience

Generally more than 12 years of related work experience preferably in the mining industry

University degree in area of expertise

Additional specialized education of up to 2 years including masters level degree or equivalent

Well-developed influencing skills with demonstrated experience in driving organization change

Exceptional technical report writing and communication skills

Demonstrated ability to collate, analyze, interpret and communicate complex data

Ability to quickly identify key technical and business issues

Must be self-directed and work well in a highly unstructured environment

Experience in managing complex multi-stakeholder projects

A broader understanding of corporate social responsibility and sustainable development
