The Role:

The primary purpose of the Autonomous Systems Engineer is to provide leadership in the implementation of the Côté Gold Digital Mine Strategy.

The role will assist the Technical Services Manager to provide technical expertise associated with the deployment, configuration, testing, verification, validation and on-going support of all associated systems and technologies that support autonomous and manned operation of the mobile fleet.

The role offers a significant and unique opportunity to help Côté Gold realize their vision of becoming IAMGOLD’s Digital Mine by properly deploying a suite of advanced technologies capable of delivering tangible value through autonomous machine operation combined with a highly skilled workforce and optimized processes.

This is a leadership role that will heavily draw on the candidate’s expertise as a strategic thinker, project manager, technical subject matter expert, systems specialist and curious problem solver.

The role will also require engagement at all levels within the supplier organizations whom are involved in delivering and supporting machine control and automation systems at Côté Gold. The role will also require industry affiliations and interface with government agencies/regulators.


Your Responsibilities:

Key Area: Strategy and alignment – Further define and deliver aspects of the Technical Services operating model related to machine control and automation for hard-rock open pit mines. This covers both relevant mobile plant and fixed infrastructure.

Duties:
Engage with key business unit representatives to understand current and future business requirements and support needs.
Evaluate how available and developing technologies may improve operating effectiveness and efficiency.
Engage with Technical Services functions to understand current and future business requirements. This includes strong collaboration with Mine Engineering for alignment of open pit automation impacts on mining methods and design. Work in close collaboration with IT around all related digitalization areas including integration, infrastructure, communications, reporting, software procurement, license management and support.
Engage with vendors to understand their product development strategies and plans and ensure they understand Côté Gold’s vision and development path for control and automation in the open pit environment.
Engage internally with various service functions within Côté Gold to ensure alignment and understanding including Supply Chain (e.g. technical specifications and contract management), Legal (e.g. service level and support agreements) and Regulatory (e.g. MoL engagement, risk register update and written procedure updates).
Key Area: Ensure proper project management and gated methodology to ensure the project delivers on scope, cost and time. This approach encompasses formalized use of tools and templates, rigorous document control and knowledge management, and a comprehensive matrix of formal governance meetings.

Duties:
Risk management matrix kept up to date and live during the implementation and execution. Develop mitigation plans related to risk and ensure plans are implemented and followed. As well, opportunities are identified and integrated to help improve the impact of Automation
Meetings with project stakeholders including: Operations Meetings, Steering Committee Meetings, and Communities of Practice Meetings for internal stakeholders; vendor relationship meetings, steering committee meetings, and executive health checks with software vendors; and various project team meetings including weekly build progress and sponsor update meetings to monitor project progress.
Build Management – Lead the ongoing development of the Côté Gold operating model related to machine control and automation open pit operations in line with business unit requirements, including the ongoing deployment of integrated on-board systems and interfaces, PLC or embedded computer data acquisition and control of infrastructure, wireless communication technologies, integrated office technologies, data analytics and reporting, interfaces to Côté Gold’s solutions and supporting system documentation and training.
Clearly define and communicate objectives and functional capabilities of operating technology for surface machine control and automation.
Ensure existing systems are fully understood and leveraged. Develop and implement site management policies and procedures related to Mine Automation Program as well as develop training material to be integrated into site induction and specific role training for personnel working on the Mine Site.
Contract Management – Prepare an executable and deliverable Project Charter for approval by all stakeholders. This activity includes regular monitoring of contract performance, liaising with stakeholders to ensure they understand and capitalize on contract provisions, following the conflict resolution process, and supporting Supply Chain in contract negotiation processes.
Key Area: Implementation & Post Implementation Support – Support site implementation efforts related to surface machine control and automation.

Duties:
Promote system capability to senior site and business unit leaders.
Assist in development of the business case, liaising with software and hardware vendors to clarify requirements and solicit quotations.
Assist in development of the project schedules, project execution plan, conducting current state assessments, redesigning business processes, conducting RACI workshops, conducting criticality reviews, developing business and system rules, conducting awareness and software training.
Undertake best practice assessments using workshops, interviews and data collection techniques to identify improvement opportunities.
Provide training, coaching and support to individuals as required.
Key Area: Value Tracking and Reporting.

Duties
Assist to develop tools and approaches to consistently and routinely track and report value delivered through the application of surface machine control and automation practices.
Ensure this value is captured centrally and reported in Technical Services value delivery reports.
Ensure scorecards of key KPIs and metrics are agreed, established and implemented for monitoring and reporting.

Qualifications

What we look for:

Degree qualification in Engineering or related discipline.
Post Graduate qualification in maintenance, reliability, robotics/automation/electronics or business administration is desirable.
Professional registration and/or membership in committees and/or technical societies would be considered an asset.
Current and valid Driver’s Licence for Ontario.
Proven experience in defining, deploying and implementing, safety enhancing, value adding, mine control and automation technology in hard-rock open pit mines, consistent with an agreed to road map or strategy.
Demonstrated competence in all aspects of the scoping, execution and assessment of structured proof of concept type programs to aid in the definition, selection or leverage of leading practice operating technology.
History of effective Change Management implementation and participation related to automation and control.
A proven track record of certified Project Management experience with large, capital intensive, technical projects that demonstrated an ability to effectively engage and communicate with internal and external customer groups including understanding needs and delivery of value adding solutions.
Participation in implementing Lean Engineering principles (Lean-Six Sigma) would be considered an asset.
Additional qualifications – competency requirements Leading teams and managing people, including in a central role, across multiple or diverse surface operations.
A deep knowledge of open pit mobile mining equipment and infrastructure automation and control solutions applied to hard-rock.
Strong data analysis skills.
Proven ability to work closely and collaboratively with IT.
Experience in cross-functional team assignment(s).
Understanding of the end-to-end value chain, data flow, processes and technologies for surface mining.
Can assess and articulate the value proposition of surface mining technologies today and looking forward.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as the ability to liaise at a high level with a diverse range of interdepartmental team members and vendors.
Self-motivated and detail oriented with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
Ability to work collaboratively with operators, SMEs, managers, technical experts, practitioners and vendors.
The ability to work flexibly to meet the frequent out of normal office hours.
Strong financial analysis skills is desirable.
Understanding of monitoring, control, automation, dispatch and communications systems in an open pit operation including experience with AHS and/or ADS deployments in an operational context would be considered an asset.
Knowledge of mechanical equipment and electronics; including reliability and machine health monitoring systems would be considered an asset.
Leadership Requirements
Strong communication skills, solid understanding of risk management principles, conformance to design and standards is a critical trait, tenacity to work through challenges by collaborating and using operational discipline, relying on their skills and developing others to raise the teams capabilities, to know where the value is, to be a planner and then to follow the plan and in this capacity to not be afraid to fail and learn from it.
