Sustainability Manager, Bilingual EN/ FR - Wahgnion Mine Site

Summary of Role

The position is responsible for the management of the sustainability department of WGO mine including Environment, Community relation and resettlement component.


The sustainability manager is a key management role that works collaboratively with the different departments on site, as well as our Corporate / Regional team to develop, implement and sustain compliance with Teranga sustainability policy and strategies for sustainable development.

Contract Duration: Depending on expat or national appointment

 Key Responsibilities

The Sustainability Manager is in charge of all technical and managerial items related to the site sustainability Management (Environment, Community relation and Resettlement plan), and proper functioning of the Site department team.

As Head of Department position, the activities related to this position include:

HOD / Leadership: management responsibilities for

·         Preparation of annual budgets and Monitoring costs against budgets on a monthly basis

·         Weekly, monthly, quarterly and monthly reporting

·         Preparation of annual tactical plan in Environment and Social performance (Community relation and resettlement) and setting up annual objectives

·         Annual review of all staff within the Department.

·         Lead the implementation on site of the Teranga sustainability strategy and Responsible Gold Mining Principles of the World Gold Council

·         Carrying out staff training and ensure all members of the workforce recognise and understand their own contributions to improved environmental and social performance.

·         Maintaining duty of care obligations and promotion of effective safety systems for all employees and contractors, including responsibility for correcting unsafe acts.

·         Ensuring that all duties are performed safely and in compliance with all government regulations as well as the Group’s policies and procedures.

·         Coaching and mentoring of Co-ordinators and Superintendents of the sustainability team

Technical: management responsibilities for

·         Risk assessment of any projects related to the department

·         Assure compliance of WGO with legislative requirements

·         Technical review of Departmental production (reports, databases, KPI…)

·         Definition and lead the implementation of Environmental and social Management Plan and SOP associated

·         Definition and lead the implementation of community engagement plan and Community investment plan

·         Lead the management of the ongoing Resettlement plan of WGO

·         Site closure plan update and progressive rehabilitation plan

·         Responsible for the application/maintenance of all permits and variances associated with environmental and Social issues at Wahgnion,

·         Technical validation of documents needed for permitting (related to environmental and social matters)

·         Management of consultants involved in technical studies

·         Lead the preparation of reports to government agencies as requested in order to meet legislative requirements


Representation: management responsibilities for

·         Attend public meetings and hearings as required and act as the Company representative with government officials

·         Promote and raise awareness, at all levels of site, of the impact of emerging environmental issues and Social Licence to Operate

·         Build relationship with all relevant stakeholders

·         Improve Teranga’s visibility as a responsible mining company


Required Skills & Experience

·         Degree in Environment and Social Sciences required ideally with a Masters’ Degree in a related field

·         15 + years experience in the field of community relations, environment and social responsibility programs including a minimum of 10 years experience in the mining industry

·         Experience with resettlement program around infrastructure activities

·         Knowledge of mining operations and sustainability

·         Strong project management experience

·         Fluency in English and French, both verbal and written, is essential

·         Intermediate level skill and knowledge of a computer, including MS Office programs such as Outlook, Word, and Excel

·         Strong inter personal and organizational skills

·         Strong communication, planning and execution skills needed.

·         Excellent leadership and management skills with proven ability to motivate and empower team.

·         Ability to manage and develop staff

·         Must possess strong cultural sensitivity and be able to execute work successfully in a different culture

·         Intermediate level skill and knowledge of a computer, including MS Office programs such as Outlook, Word, and Excel
